Blue Jays’ Dylan Cease falls just short of breaking Roger Clemens record

Blue Jays star Dylan Cease fell short of breaking a Roger Clemens record despite turning in a strong start against the Yankees.

The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees by a final score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Dylan Cease pitched well once again, but he did lose an impressive streak during the game. Cease ended up giving up one run, bringing his road scoreless streak to an end at 42 innings. According to Sarah Langs, that is the second best mark in the expansion era. Langs reports that only Roger Clemens had a longer road scoreless streak, as the former MLB star turned in 48.1 innings of scoreless baseball from 2004-2005.

Cease has enjoyed a strong season without question. He is among the frontrunners for the American League Cy Young Award. Although he walked five batters on Saturday, the Blue Jays star carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning. Cease ultimately surrendered one earned run across 6.2 innings of work while striking out eight Yankees.

The right-handed hurler now holds a 2.37 ERA in his 24 outings on the mound. He has 209 strikeouts across 144.1 innings as well. The Blue Jays have endured an up and down season, but their decision to sign Cease this past offseason was clearly a good move. Toronto is still in the American League Wild Card conversation, and Cease is a big reason why.

The Yankees earned a 3-1 victory to begin the three-game series on Friday, so the teams are now tied 1-1 heading into Sunday’s ball game. Jose Soriano (10-6, 3.23 ERA) will start for the Blue Jays while the Yankees will turn to Carlos Rodon (4-2, 3.22 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 PM ET.
