Billy Ray Cyrus didn’t think he’d make it back to the stage.

In an interview, the country music star said he was hospitalized in 2024 with a severe, near-fatal case of sepsis. He described how dire it got—doctors told him to “get his affairs in order”—and said the experience left him fighting for his life and staring straight into one of his darkest fears.

He also tied the moment to a painful memory: two years before the sepsis, his mom had died in that same hospital, on the very floor where he was on treatment.

After the hospitalization, Billy Ray recovered, but the health crisis didn’t end when he left the hospital. He later developed vocal paralysis, a condition that affected both his ability to speak and sing. For him. the stakes became intensely personal again when he found himself confronting the possibility that his voice—and his career—might not return.

“I don’t know exactly how it evolved. It was my worst nightmare. Two years before that, my mom had died in that hospital, in the very floor that I was on,” Billy Ray told People.

Sepsis. as doctors describe it. is a life-threatening medical emergency that happens when the body’s response to an infection ends up injuring its own tissues and organs. Instead of simply protecting the body, the infection-fighting processes can trigger widespread inflammation that causes organs to start functioning poorly. If it’s not treated. sepsis can progress to septic shock. marked by a dramatic drop in blood pressure that can lead to organ failure and death.

Symptoms can include fever, chills, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, confusion, extreme pain or discomfort, clammy skin, and low blood pressure. With sepsis able to worsen quickly, early diagnosis and treatment are key to improving survival chances.

For Billy Ray, the fallout showed up in his voice. After recovering from sepsis, he was diagnosed with vocal paralysis, and he said losing his voice was “his worst nightmare,” leaving him uncertain whether he would ever perform again.

Fans may have noticed the struggle during his appearance as the Ship on The Masked Singer. Billy Ray later said he was still dealing with the aftereffects of the crisis when he took on the challenge.

He also credited his girlfriend, Elizabeth Hurley, with pushing him forward. “Elizabeth would say to me, ‘Do you understand your voice is coming back?’” he recalled. “She encouraged me to the point where she had me do The Masked Singer.”

In the middle of the recovery, music and family became a lifeline. Billy Ray said he leaned on lyrics written by his daughter. Noah Cyrus. for a song penned by his son. Braison Cyrus. He pointed to the line. “Some days. we might fall apart / But we’re never broken. ” describing it as one of his few sources of comfort during a difficult stretch.

Today, Billy Ray is continuing his recovery and preparing to release his first studio album in 14 years, The Hill.

  1. Wait so it was sepsis AND vocal paralysis? That sounds like he got some infection from the hospital (or from touring) and then his voice just never came back. Glad he’s ok though.

  2. I swear hospitals always mess people up. If his mom died on the same floor then it sounds cursed or something, not just bad luck. Also “get his affairs in order” like damn they were acting like he was a goner.

  3. I read this headline and thought it said he “nearly died singing again” lol. But yeah sepsis is crazy serious. He credited Elizabeth Hurley? I don’t even know how she fits into it besides being famous, but I’m glad he recovered.
