Big Tech executives join Army Reserve to modernize

For the Army, the shift is practical—and it’s arrived in the form of three technology leaders who can log on from civilian life.

A second crop of tech executives entered the Army Reserve last week, expanding the service’s links with Big Tech as it continues a dramatic effort to modernize its equipment and systems and better prepare for modern warfare.

Those recently joining include Dane Knecht, chief technology officer of Cloudflare; Sam Pullara, managing director and CTO of Sutter Hill Ventures, a Palo Alto investment firm; and Serkan Piantino, a former Reddit executive and co-founder of Facebook AI Research.

They have joined a unit known as Detachment 201. a special unit “designed to bridge the gap between private-sector innovation and military modernization. ” the Army said in a press release. The move reflects the Pentagon’s push to leverage private-sector technical expertise to address complex national security and defense challenges.

Detachment 201 members are reservists, can work remotely, and must complete a minimum of 112 hours of service annually. Their primary role is to serve as senior advisors to help drive the Army Transformation Initiative—focused on high-level technological strategies in areas such as cyber. AI and machine learning applications. and other data-driven capabilities.

Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Orlando Howard said in an email that “their primary role is to serve as senior advisors to help drive the Army Transformation Initiative. ” concentrated on high-level technological strategies in areas such as cyber. AI and machine learning applications. and other data-driven capabilities.

Detachment 201 is not the first time the Pentagon has brought elite tech talent into uniform. The four tech leaders who entered the Army Reserve one year ago were Shyam Sankar. chief technology officer of Palantir; Andrew Bosworth. chief technology officer of Meta; Kevin Weil. former chief product officer at OpenAI; and Bob McGrew. an advisor at Thinking Machines Lab and former chief research officer at OpenAI. All entered the Army as lieutenant colonels.

That rank matters. It takes most officers over a decade to reach. though the senior entry. known as a “direct commission. ” is not unheard of. Most military medical providers. chaplains. and veterinarians join at slightly more senior ranks. though they undergo their own version of boot camp. while Det 201 does not.

To address concerns that skeptics have raised in the past—particularly about ethics when advisors have deep professional ties to military technology and defense acquisitions—the Army says members are governed by a multi-layered ethics framework, including the Joint Ethics Regulation.

Howard said the framework includes mandatory confidential financial disclosures, annual ethics training, and legal review of each work assignment. He also said “Recusal from any matter affecting the financial interests of members of Detachment 201 is mandatory.”

What they do day to day is less clear, but the Army has highlighted Det 201’s strategic counsel on “critical challenges” such as munitions supply chain data analysis, organic industrial base investments, and strategies for autonomous systems and counter-drone technologies.

Munitions, industrial investment, and drone tech are significant areas of concern for the Pentagon. The war in Iran has strained US munitions stockpiles. raising concerns about the Pentagon’s ability to sustain a major conflict. At the same time, the rise of drones is creating new opportunities and challenges for the military and manufacturers. The Pentagon is also increasingly seeking new ways to revitalize the American defense industry to build the arsenal it believes it needs for future fights.

Addressing some of these issues for the Army is where Det 201 comes into play. Howard said members participate in collaborative advisory and brainstorming sessions with senior military leaders to accelerate Army transformation. He added that they also directly advise the Army’s teams in making technical system changes.

  1. I don’t get it… they “log on from civilian life” which sounds like they’re just working a side job for the government. 112 hours a year is like nothing. Next they’ll be patching tanks with updates from an app.

  2. Serkan Piantino is literally from Facebook AI Research right? So are they gonna use this to train some new AI for social media stuff too or is that not what they mean. Also Cloudflare… isn’t that the company that helps websites, so now it’s cyber war? Idk man.

  3. This is gonna be fine until it’s not. They say “senior advisors” but we all know it turns into contractors and influence. Modern warfare = more tracking/cyber, and now the same people who make platforms are “advising” the Army. Kinda feels like a conflict of interest, unless they expect Dane Knecht to start doing maneuvers in full gear or whatever.
