Benintendi’s pinch-hit grand slam lifts White Sox 5-1

Benintendi pinch-hit – Andrew Benintendi delivered a pinch-hit grand slam in the eighth inning as the Chicago White Sox snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

NEW YORK — The Yankees had the game at 1-all when Andrew Benintendi came off the bench. replacing Randal Grichuk as Chicago’s third pinch hitter of the inning. The moment became clear quickly: Benintendi took Camilo Doval’s first pitch — a 100 mph sinker — and sent it into the right-center seats for a pinch-hit grand slam.

It was the swing that ended Chicago’s nine-game losing streak and pushed the White Sox to a 5-1 win at Yankee Stadium. New York’s skid had been messy enough in the first part of this three-game set, too. Chicago had been outscored 22-7 in the first two games. and the Yankees had put up 58-18 across the stretch that defined the skid in the Bronx.

Benintendi’s blast marked his fourth career grand slam and his second pinch-hit homer. It also came in a moment built from more than one at-bat: Sam Antonacci doubled off Fernando Cruz (4-2) earlier, setting the stage for the big swing that turned a close inning into separation.

The inning wasn’t over in the eighth. After Benintendi’s homer, Tim Hill plunked pinch-hitter Jacob Gonzalez and Tristan Peters with pitches before getting an out. Colson Montgomery added to the lift as well, homering and making a key defensive play in the seventh before Chicago took the lead.

That defensive moment involved Anthony Volpe. In the seventh, Montgomery tagged out Volpe trying to stretch a double. Volpe hit a ball over the head of left fielder Junior Perez. but Perez’s route didn’t end the play; he recovered to make a strong one-hop throw to Montgomery at third base. and Volpe was out by several feet.

New York did get something from Ryan McMahon earlier. tying the game in the third with a home run off bulk reliever Sean Burke (4-4). But the Yankees’ four-game winning streak was snapped anyway. and their momentum didn’t have much protection with captain Aaron Judge out due to a fractured right rib.

The evening carried more injury trouble as well. Jazz Chisholm Jr. left the game in the fourth after fouling a pitch off the area near his groin.

On the mound, the White Sox kept New York from stringing things together. Yankees starter Ryan Weathers allowed one run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight and walking one. Burke followed opener Bryan Hudson and gave Chicago another solid stretch, permitting one run and five hits in 7 1/3 innings.

For Chicago, the win mattered beyond the final score. It was their first victory in the Bronx since June 8, 2023. The White Sox improved their road form as well. winning for the fifth time in their last 17 road games. while finishing 6-5 in an 11-game stretch against the Phillies. Braves. Dodgers and Yankees.

The next steps arrive quickly. In Friday’s opener of a three-game series at Detroit, White Sox RHP Erick Fedde (2-5, 4.50 ERA) is set to face Yankees series counterpart LHP Tarik Skubal (3-3, 2.81).

On the other side of the schedule, the Yankees open their next three-game series against visiting Cincinnati on Friday, with RHP Cam Schlittler (7-3, 1.82 ERA) scheduled to face RHP Rhett Lowder (3-3, 4.60).
