Ben Shelton dethrones Carlos Alcaraz with career-defining win at US Open

In a 24-hour sports news cycle that featured more LSU-SEC drama, the return of Aaron Judge and an improbable comeback by Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton wins the day, and the next one for that matter. The 23-year-old American went to depths he has never gone before and upset Carlos Alcaraz (6-7, 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6), a seven-time Grand Slam champion and a man who rarely falls in five-set matches.

Shelton did not carry himself like the underdog during this near-four-and-a-half-hour epic. He conducted himself like Alcaraz’s equal. And then he surpassed him.

The No. 8 seed displayed excellent conditioning, poise and power inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, clinching the quarterfinals victory with a blistering ace in the decisive 10-point tiebreak. The biggest moment of his professional career took place at 3:33 a.m. ET. It was certainly worth the wait.

There were several times in the match when it felt like Alcaraz was about to take full control. Shelton let the first set slip away, but then he outclassed his supremely talented opponent for an extended stretch to capture momentum. A steep falloff in the fourth was supposed to give way to a quick final set. Shelton showed his maturity, however, and ascended to another level in front of a captivated New York crowd.

Down 5-3 in the tiebreak, the 6-foot-4 lefty rallied one final time. He did not melt under the pressure, forcing Alcaraz to flinch first. And indeed he did. Shelton prevailed, 10-7, and proceeded to celebrate this life-changing experience.

The timing of this breakthrough makes the achievement even more surreal. Ben Shelton had failed to advance to the second week in three of his last four majors. He also lost in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters two weeks before the US Open began. A win at last month’s National Bank Open showcased his abilities, but there was just a lack of consistency. Shelton’s magnum opus did not appear attainable in 2026.

Now, he is only one win away from his first-ever Grand Slam final. The former national champion will face countryman Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals on Friday. Beating Carlos Alcaraz is special. But doing so before potentially becoming the first American man to win a major in 23 years would be legendary.
