Bears leave CB Kyler Gordon on PUP list to start season, ruling him out for first four games

The Bears’ drama with injured nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon will go on for at least another month. They left him on the physically unable-to-perform list at the roster deadline Sunday, meaning he’ll miss at least the first four games of the season.

They did the same with defensive lineman Shemar Turner (knee) and backup linebacker Noah Sewell (Achilles tendon). The earliest those three can play is Oct. 11 at the Packers.

Veteran safety/cornerback Cam Lewis or rookie cornerback Malik Muhammad likely will start in Gordon’s place. Muhammad has gotten most of the first-team reps lately.

The Bears likely will decide Monday whether to put offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo (knee), running back Kyle Monangai (knee), tight end Hayden Large (unspecified) and defensive end Austin Booker (groin) on injured reserve. They needed to be on the 53-man roster at the deadline to be eligible to play this season.

Gordon was out all of training camp with a calf injury. The Bears have said little about his status, other than general manager Ryan Poles implying that Gordon hadn’t fully embraced the rehab program the team put together for him.

He missed 14 games last season with three injuries, leaving the Bears’ defense in a bind without one of its top players.
