Barry Keoghan to Reprise ‘Top Boy’ Role for Netflix Prequel Series ‘Jonny Boy’

Barry Keoghan is returning to the Top Boy world!

On Wednesday (August 26), Deadline announced that the 33-year-old Oscar-nominated actor will be reprising his role as Jonny McGee for a five-part Netflix prequel series, which will be written by Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett. The upcoming series is titled Jonny Boy.

If you didn’t know, Top Boy was a British crime thriller series, which first premiered in 2011 and ran for five seasons through 2023. Jonny McGee was an antagonist in season 5. He was a high-ranking member of the Irish mob who distributed drugs in London for his uncle, Tadgh McGee (Brian Gleeson).

Barry and his producing partner Des Byrne will be co-producing Jonny Boy through their Wolfclub Productions.

“We pitched our vision and idea to Netflix and the executive producers and they were so supportive in wanting to bring our passion project forward, exploring Jonny McGee’s origin story through a new bold lens,” Barry and Des shared in a joint statement.

Jonny Boy isn’t the only Top Boy spinoff project currently in the works. Netflix has also greenlit Jaq (working title), a series that will focus on Jasmin Jobson‘s character Jacqueline “Jaq” Lawrence.

Barry has been very busy for the past several months working on The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event, in which he’ll be playing Ringo Starr.
