Instead. she stepped back from the spotlight after canceling her appearance—recovering from a knee injury—then reached out directly with a virtual message that carried her signature mix of artistry and urgency.

In a video. the iconic singer. 84. said. “I was mesmerized by those images on the screen.” She added that they were “so powerful that they’re still in my head. ” and described the feeling behind her own long-running desire to act: “I wanted to be an actress and live in those other more interesting worlds.”.

Streisand also reflected on what she was doing while watching—what she said was less passive than it might appear. She explained that she later realized she was always “looking at the movie as a whole” and asking a lot of questions.

“I didn’t realize at the time, but I was thinking like a director. Trying to figure out how to tell the story. And I had stories I wanted to tell,” she said, recalling her directorial debut with 1981’s Yentl.

Her Cannes absence came days earlier in a statement released on Sunday, May 17. “On the advice of my doctors, as I continue recovering from a knee injury, I am sadly unable to attend the Festival de Cannes this year,” Streisand wrote.

Even from afar, she made clear what the honor still meant to her. She said she was “deeply honored to receive the honorary Palme d’Or” and that she had “so been looking forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition.” She also said she was anticipating time with “colleagues whom I so admire. ” and hoped to return to France. “a place I have always loved.”.

While she regretted she couldn’t be there in person. Streisand used her message to extend support to the filmmakers at the festival. She offered her “warmest congratulations to all of the filmmakers from around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being celebrated this year. ” and thanked “the Festival” and everyone “who continues to support and champion the art of cinema.”.

In the virtual message, she drew a line between her own creative journey and what Cannes represents for her now. “In this crazy volatile world that seems more fractured every day. it’s reassuring to see the compelling movies at this festival. by artists from many countries. ” she said.
