Aussies struggled to name Socceroos after Turkey win

Aussies struggled – After Australia’s 2026 World Cup opener against Turkey, a test in Australia exposed a surprising gap in public knowledge of the Socceroos—many people couldn’t correctly identify even a single player on a poster.

The Socceroos were everywhere in recent days, and it looked like the whole country was watching. Australia defeated Turkey in its first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with millions tuning in across the nation.

Yet when a simple poster test was put to people living in Australia, the results landed like a jolt. An A3 image showing four random headshots alongside four Socceroos squad members was shown to several participants, and they were asked to pick out the four Socceroos players.

For many, it didn’t click. Some interviewees managed to point to one or two players. Almost everyone else had to guess who was who.

Christian Volpato—pictured as one of Australia’s biggest stars—wasn’t recognised by many people. The players listed on the poster challenge were Lucas Herrington, Christian Volpato, Kai Trewin and Tete Yengi.

Every person interviewed could only guess who the squad members were. rather than being able to recognise one or two straight away. One person said: “I watched the game on the weekend. but could only guess from looking at this [image].” Another admitted: “I have no idea [which are Socceroos] at all. but I’ll give it a try. ” while a third said: “I have zero clue.”.

The confusion came just days after 4.78 million Australians tuned in to SBS’ coverage of Australia’s match against Turkey. The contrast is stark: a massive TV audience on match day, and a shaky ability to correctly identify players when recognition is tested in daylight.

The wider picture also appears to be out of sync with the World Cup buzz. Less than 25,000 fans packed venues to watch the Socceroos face both Cameroon and Curacao in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup this year.

The message from the poster test is blunt: the Socceroos may be taking the world by storm, but at home, many Australians still struggle to name the faces behind the shirt—except when the biggest tournament arrives.

  1. I watched highlights and Christian Volpato looks famous, so how could nobody know him? Maybe the poster photo was just bad or from the wrong team.

  2. Wait so people watched the match but couldn’t pick players on an A3 poster… that seems like the test was rigged or something. Like if it’s from Turkey game then sure, but daylight headshots always look different anyway? Also I’ve never heard of Tete Yengi, so maybe he’s new.

  3. That’s crazy to me that 4.78 million watched on SBS but then everyone’s like “zero clue.” Sounds like people only watch for the vibe and not the actual players. And if less than 25k went to watch vs Cameroon and Curacao then idk why they’re acting shocked at the World Cup hype either, it’s not like the whole country pays attention year round. Honestly I’d fail that poster test too, but I still think they should’ve used better pictures because the names alone don’t help.
