Astros tell suitors Walker, Peña off limits

Astros wasting – With Houston sitting at 36-42 and only three games behind the AL West lead, the Astros have made their trade deadline message clear: teams are wasting time calling about Jeremy Peña or Christian Walker. Houston’s focus instead is on bullpen help and a left-han

Houston enters Sunday with a 36-42 record and a simple reality hanging over the clubhouse: the AL West lead is only three games away, but the Astros have been inconsistent enough to keep their urgency high.

They’re not acting like a team headed for a fire sale.

Through Bob Nightengale of USA Today. the Astros have told teams that they are wasting their time asking about shortstop Jeremy Peña and first baseman Christian Walker. Nightengale wrote that Houston “may be a sub-.500 team. ” but the franchise plans to be a buyer at the deadline rather than a seller in a division where only the Seattle Mariners are above .500. Houston is searching for bullpen help and a left-handed hitting outfielder.

This isn’t just a marketing line. It comes at a moment when plenty of people around baseball have already started to question whether the Astros need a new vision. Houston has dealt with injuries across their roster in 2026. and those setbacks—paired with the team’s early struggles—have fueled talk that changes could be coming.

But Houston’s message is that its path runs through Peña and Walker, not away from them.

Walker has been a steady part of that plan even while the team tries to climb. Through his first 77 games in 2026, the first baseman is hitting .240 with 18 home runs and 52 RBIs.

Peña has carried his own weight offensively and on the base paths as well. In his first 40 games, the shortstop is batting .284 with six home runs, 18 RBIs and five stolen bases.

The Astros are not blind to the work ahead. They’ve gone 5-5 in their last 10 games, and a 36-42 record is still a hole to dig out of. But the franchise is making its priorities unmistakable: bolster the roster for a playoff push. add what’s missing in the bullpen and in a left-handed hitting outfield option. and keep the core names that they believe can drive a turnaround.

In Houston’s view, the chances of the season improving run through Walker and Peña—exactly the two players teams have been told not to bother asking about.
