Unai Emery’s Aston Villa sealed their place in next season’s Champions League with a ruthless 4-2 win over Liverpool, setting up a Europa League Final against Freiburg in Istanbul. The result leaves Arne Slot under fresh pressure after an untidy performance at

The lights were still warm on Villa Park as Aston Villa turned a set-piece blueprint into a Champions League statement, and sent Liverpool back to Anfield with more doubts than answers.

Next week. Villa travel to Istanbul for the Europa League Final against Freiburg with their place in Europe’s top competition secured for next season.. For Unai Emery. it is an achievement he will not take for granted. even after being left out of the Premier League’s manager of the year shortlist despite the scale of what his team has done.

Liverpool, though, are looking in a different direction.. Arne Slot has insisted his job at Anfield is safe. but “sacked in the morning” chants from the Holte End captured the mood after a performance that was untidy and exposed.. Villa’s 4-2 victory does more than win a match—it raises another question over Slot’s position just as Liverpool’s qualification hopes hang on finishing above the line.

Villa made a bright start, and the sharpness belonged to Ollie Watkins.. With eight goals in his last 10 games. the forward produced another early burst. collecting a pass from Emi Buendia before firing high and wide.. Giorgi Mamardashvili then wandered too far and was robbed by Rogers, forcing Ibrahima Konate into a crucial defensive header.

Liverpool had their chances, but moments went missing.. When Mamardashvili survived a scare. Emi Martinez was next to be rescued—Gakpo converted from Ryan Gravenberch’s shot only for the Dutchman to be offside.. Martinez still had work to do, flying to his right to keep out Dominik Szoboszlai’s 30-yard effort.

With half-time approaching, Villa finally turned pressure into control.. A brilliant set-piece routine freed Rogers. who left the box as though for a short one before returning to shake off Rio Ngumoha.. Lucas Digne collected a return pass from McGinn and found Rogers in space. and the Villa man did the rest from 15 yards for the half-time lead.

The second period began with intent from the visitors, and Ngumoha looked Liverpool’s liveliest player. The 17-year-old zoomed past Matty Cash and crossed invitingly to the far post, with both Curtis Jones and Szoboszlai unable to finish the job.

Villa did not wait for the next opening. After a Szoboszlai free-kick, Liverpool switched off—Van Dijk sneaked around the back and planted a header into the far corner to bring the score level.

Yet the game swung back quickly in Villa’s favour. Ngumoha cut inside and hit the post with a low swerving effort that left Martinez stranded, but Gakpo was there only to put the rebound into the North Stand, leaving Liverpool punished for what might have been their moment to recover.

That same ruthless edge arrived in the finishing.. Villa made the score 3-2 when Youri Tielemans volleyed Buendia’s corner goalwards.. Mamardashvili spilled the rebound to Pau Torres, but Watkins was waiting to tap in his second.. McGinn sealed the night with a glorious effort into the top corner from the angle of the box. before Van Dijk added a second late on with another far-post header from Szoboszlai’s cross.

For all of Liverpool’s late momentum, the damage was already done—this was a Villa performance built on precision and ruthless timing, warning Freiburg that they will need more than reputation in Istanbul.

Aston Villa’s win, their Europa League trip to Turkey, and the secured Champions League spot are now the story.. For Liverpool. the immediate task is staring them in the face: they may have to watch those old videos from 2005 to remember what it feels like when everything goes right—because this time. it definitely did not.

  1. The headline says “ruthless” but it sounds like Liverpool didn’t even want it? Also the Europa Final in Istanbul thing… didn’t they already play that kind of game like last month?

  2. Wait “sacked in the morning” chants?? People are acting like the manager got fired on the spot. I mean Slot said his job is safe, so why everyone panicking. Also Watkins scoring a bunch doesn’t automatically mean the team is better, it’s probably just one hot streak.

  3. I’m sorry but this whole Champions League qualification thing feels rigged. Like how does a 4-2 just “secure” it? Doesn’t it depend on points and other teams losing. And Freiburg in Istanbul?? Istanbul is so far, are they gonna fly the whole squad or is this like a neutral stadium vibe. Either way, Liverpool needs to stop playing sloppy set pieces.
