FRISCO. Texas — Ryan Lasko stayed motionless on the field after a collision with minor league teammate Devin Taylor while trying to catch a flyball during a Double-A game in Frisco. Texas. By Tuesday night, the Athletics prospect was in surgery, and on Wednesday the team said he was in stable condition.

Lasko underwent back surgery after fracturing a C6–C7 vertebra. Dr. Jonathan Poggi performed a spinal decompression and stabilization operation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano.

Lasko is an outfielder for Double-A Midland. The collision happened during a game when Lasko and Taylor dove into each other in an attempt to make the catch, and Lasko did not move after the play.

In a statement Wednesday. A’s general manager David Forst said he had been in contact with Lasko’s mother. Patti. and offered the organization’s support. Forst said the team was “incredibly grateful to Noah Huff and Audy Merrick. our athletic trainers in Midland. for their on-field actions last night. as well as to the Frisco RoughRiders and the paramedics on the scene.”.

Forst added that the club was encouraged by updates from Dr. Poggi and would keep “all of the resources of our medical staff” focused on Lasko’s recovery.

He also said player development director Ed Sprague was traveling to Frisco and that counseling would be available to players.

Lasko, 24, was selected by the Athletics in the second round of the 2023 amateur draft from Rutgers. This season with Midland, he batted .209 with six home runs, 34 RBIs and a .635 OPS.

Last year, Lasko appeared in 13 games at Triple-A Las Vegas. He also played 21 games in the Arizona Fall League for promising prospects, batting .357 with nine stolen bases.

The coming days will be watched closely as doctors monitor the effects of the surgery and Lasko begins the long process of recovery from a vertebra injury.
