Arthur Fery’s night at Queen’s didn’t begin with drama, but it certainly didn’t end without it.
The 23-year-old wildcard started his quarter-final push against veteran Frenchman Adrian Mannarino and. after finishing a tight first set. got hit by something he’s learned to expect: a nosebleed at the start of the second set. He received treatment on Andy Murray Arena. steadied himself. and kept the momentum—closing out the match with a 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 victory to book his place in the HSBC Championships quarter-finals.
For Britain, the timing mattered. Fery is the last Briton left in singles after Cameron Norrie lost to fourth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Tuesday.
Fery’s performance also delivered what he called the best result of his career so far. He reached his first ATP Tour quarter-final with the win, a milestone he didn’t come to easily. He had previously been ranked 461 when he upset 20th seed Alexei Popyrin on the opening day of last year’s Wimbledon.
Playing in London—where he grew up—made the moment feel even bigger. “It’s special to be playing in London where I grew up and in front of all these British tennis fans,” Fery said.
He added: “This is the best result of my career so far. It’s not been easy, there have been lots of ups and downs so I’m happy to get through.”
Asked about the nosebleed, Fery didn’t treat it like a mystery. “It happens to me quite often. I’m used to it.” He also explained that he doesn’t have a single clear cause. saying. “I don’t really know why it happens. Maybe nerves. Sometimes tiredness, the heat. I don’t know. It happens here and there.”.
That ability to absorb discomfort—and still finish the job—was the difference against Mannarino. Fery had already navigated the early round, beating fellow Briton Toby Samuel in the first round before overcoming the veteran to keep home hopes alive.
Now comes the next test. Fery will face seventh seed Francisco Cerundolo on Friday after the Argentine demolished American Jenson Brooksby in straight sets.
In a tournament where Britain has seen its singles challenge thin out, Fery’s surge has turned into something sturdier than a fleeting breakthrough: one more match in London, one more chance to turn a run into a headline.
