Art teacher sacked after doll lynching in class

A teacher has been dismissed after a pupil filmed her wrapping a cord around the neck of a black baby doll and suspending it in her classroom in Florida. Karen Whitmire Savage, a 63-year-old art teacher at Barrington Middle School in Hillsborough County, took the doll from one of her students, according to the 14-year-old boy who captured the footage . Noah, the boy, told WTSP-TV that he made the decision to record the incident as it unfolded on Monday. Hillsborough County Schools Superintendent Van

Ayres condemned what had taken place the following day, confirming that Savage had been removed from the campus while an investigation was conducted. By Wednesday, the school district announced that Savage had been sacked and that her conduct had been referred to the Florida Department of Education’s Office of Professional Practice Services. A spokesperson for the school district said: “We want to reiterate that we do not tolerate conduct of this nature. We took immediate action and responded swiftly to ensure the situation was handled

appropriately.” They further stated that counsellors would be made available to pupils affected by the incident. Noah revealed that most students initially laughed nervously, but once Savage hung the doll, the room fell completely silent. “After she took the doll. she took the charger cord and wrapped it around the baby’s neck, and tied it,” he said. “Everybody started telling her it was wrong and racist to do that. And then she said it was just a joke, and then she took down the doll.”

Noah shared the footage with his family group chat, before his mother Nina Williams posted it to Instagram, where it has amassed nearly 450,000 likes. “Her excuse to our kids was that she did it “to get their attention,”‘ Williams wrote. “This is NOT a classroom management tool. This is straight up hate and trauma being weaponized in front of our children in a place where they are supposed to be safe.” Noah said that once the lesson had finished, he made his way to

the student affairs office to report the incident, with Savage following him and continuing to talk over him as he tried to explain what had happened. “It was really disturbing,’ he said. “I hope that she’s not allowed to teach again. Because she shouldn’t be allowed to teach if she does things like that.” Williams said the act conjured images of racial violence and lynchings. She said: “That is not something that I expected my children in 2026 to ever have to deal with seeing

– a lynching, whether it was real or fake. “This will be with my son for the rest of his life.” The mother revealed she has been approached by civil rights lawyers and is weighing up whether to pursue legal action against the Hillsborough County School District. Nevertheless, she did commend the district for acting swiftly and removing Savage from the campus. “I do appreciate that. And I am praying that she never gets to return to another school in any county in any state,”

she said.

  1. So she took the doll from the kid and then did the whole cord thing herself? That’s not “art” that’s straight up bullying/whatever. I hate that kids laughed at first too, like kids freeze and then boom it’s too late.

  2. Wait so the kid filmed it and then the teacher got fired… but didn’t the kid say they told her it was racist? I’m just wondering if everybody was in on it at some point or if she snapped for like 2 seconds. Also Florida is always wild with stuff like this.

  3. The mom posting it on Insta is crazy but honestly I get it. If her excuse was “to get their attention” then what, the cord was for art class? I don’t understand how someone can think a black baby doll hanging is a joke. Also why are they saying “counselors available” like that fixes it? should’ve been handled way before it got to filming.
