Armed Individual Lunges at Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate, Multiple People Injured

Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton was targeted by an armed individual who lunged at her during the Canfield Fair on Sunday, leaving multiple people injured, according to her campaign.
She posted a message on X about the incident in Mahoning County, Ohio:
While attending the Canfield Fair, an armed individual lunged at Dr. Acton, injuring multiple people. Dr. Acton and [her husband] Eric are grateful for the swift and decisive action of law enforcement and are praying for the recovery of those injured. This kind of violence has no place in Ohio. Dr. Acton will always stand up to the chaos, hate and vitriol that pits us against one another.
The statement was attributed to Addie Bullock, her campaign’s communications director.
According to reporting from NBC affiliate WLWT-TV, Chris Anderson, the chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, said the suspect was taken into police custody and found to be carrying multiple weapons. Anderson said multiple campaign volunteers were knocked to the floor as the suspect lunged toward the Democratic candidate.
“What happened at our tent today during today’s visit from Dr. Acton is reprehensible and should be condemned by leaders on all sides of the aisle,” Anderson told the outlet. “MCDP is grateful for the quick response by our local law enforcement officials as well as the OSHP providing Dr. Acton security.”
Acton is facing Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, the former presidential candidate, in November’s general election. Recent polling shows the race essentially deadlocked: an August Wedgewood Poll had Acton ahead 47% to 46%, while a Fox News poll conducted around the same time put Ramaswamy ahead 50% to 48%.
Ramaswamy spokesperson Connie Luck sent the following statement to ABC 5 in Cleveland following the attempted attack: “Candidates should be able to meet with voters without having to worry about threats or violence. What happened today is completely unacceptable and has no place in politics, and we hope hope that no one was hurt.”
