Arik Armstead says he knew the speculation was out there that the Jaguars could cut him after 2026 salary-cap constraints, but he’s already showing up at June minicamp and focusing on being the best player he can be.
On a day when Jaguars players were working through the grind of June minicamp, Arik Armstead was back on the practice field too—despite the chatter that had followed his contract into the 2026 season.
The financial reality is straightforward. Jacksonville doesn’t have a lot of salary cap space heading into 2026, and Armstead’s $14 million base salary includes none of it as guaranteed. That combination is what fueled speculation that the veteran defensive lineman would be cut.
Armstead acknowledged he was aware of that talk. When he spoke with Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union. Armstead said he’s heard plenty of the rumors and understands how quickly they spread. “That’s the nature of the business,” Armstead said. “It’s impossible to ignore the chatter. Everyone has social media and there is no ignoring anything and even if you’re not on social media. somebody will tell you about it or ask you about it.”.
The discussion wasn’t just about money. Armstead also spent time playing through a hand injury that affected him late last season. Even with that limitation, he still turned in a strong year, and the Jaguars believe he will be a major part of their defense in 2026.
For Armstead, the focus is clear now that the decision hasn’t arrived in the way some people predicted. “My focus is being my best self and the best player I can be. That’s all I can control,” Armstead said.
The part he couldn’t control—whether the Jaguars would cut him—worked itself out for the moment. Armstead was on the field for minicamp, and his attention has shifted back to the only certainty he can control: preparing like his role in 2026 is secure.
