Ariana Grande Drops Lead Single for New Album Petal

Ariana Grande has released “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” the lead single from her upcoming album Petal, alongside a comic-book-inspired lyric video—weeks ahead of her July 31 release date.

Ariana Grande didn’t wait for the album rollout to feel slow. She put out the first taste of Petal—“Hate That I Made You Love Me”—and paired it with a comic-book-inspired lyric video that matches the urgency of the moment.

The song, which Grande has shared as the lead single of her new album Petal, arrives with clear creative fingerprints. “Hate That I Made You Love Me” was co-written and produced by Grande, Ilya, and Max Martin.

Petal is set to arrive after Grande’s Eternal Sunshine, with the next record due July 31 via Republic. The album is executive produced and co-written by Grande and longtime collaborator Ilya—the Swedish superproducer who has worked closely with Grande since her 2014 breakout with “Problem.”

Grande has described the album in a way that sounds like the opposite of polished distance. She said Petal is “something that is full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging.”

The new single lands while Grande’s calendar is crowded with other forms of attention. Petal follows her return to the stage this summer—her first major tour in seven years kicks off in June. Her screen work hasn’t paused. either. with her starring roles in the Wicked franchise and Focker-in-Law. the latest installment in the Meet the Parents franchise.

She has also been feeding fans with unreleased material. Earlier this month, Grande shared a previously-unreleased outtake from Dangerous Woman titled “Knew Better Part Two.”

Taken together, the timing is hard to miss: Petal’s lead single is moving through multiple lanes at once—music, visuals, live momentum, and film exposure—all while previous eras are still being reopened through an unreleased track.

For now, the focus is the new song itself—“Hate That I Made You Love Me”—and what it signals about how Grande plans to sound and present Petal as it approaches its July 31 release.

  1. I swear she drops something every 2 weeks. Also that lyric video being comic-book style feels kinda random?? Idk I’m just excited for July 31.

  2. Didn’t this already come out? Like I saw someone post the song earlier like weeks ago and now it’s “lead single” again. Seems delayed or my feed is lying. Either way the title sounds like revenge romance.

  3. Max Martin still on it so of course it’s gonna be catchy. But the article says “full of life growing through cracks of something cold and hard” and I’m like… is that about her breakup or the comic video?? Also the tour starting in June, like does she ever rest? lol
