A new report says Apple Watch Series 12 could focus on a new Watch face and performance improvements, with little else beyond fixes and likely security updates—while Apple Intelligence features may still be limited.
The next Apple Watch upgrade may land with a familiar kind of restraint. A new report claims Apple plans to make few changes to the current Apple Watch Series 11, aside from a new Watch face.
Earlier reporting had suggested the Apple Watch Series 12 could bring significant software updates, while keeping the hardware mostly the same.. This newer account. however. points to a different picture: at most. “definitely” at least one new Watch face. plus performance improvements—followed by “probably” little more than fixes. and presumably also security updates.. After that, the report doesn’t get specific, only hinting at the possibility of small hardware changes.
That comes with another uncertainty hanging over the device: whether it would directly include Apple Intelligence features.. Previous expectations leaned toward the Apple Watch not bringing Apple Intelligence features onboard.. Reports vary on the details. but it’s believed the Apple Watch currently has between 1GB and 1.5GB of RAM. and the implication is that the device’s limited memory would constrain what Apple Intelligence could do on-device.
At the same time, the Apple Watch may still be able to show results from Apple Intelligence prompts. The report doesn’t say this would happen with watchOS 27, which is due to be announced at WWDC.
The set of claims also sits uneasily alongside what some earlier expectations had already framed for future hardware: other prior reports have agreed there will be few or no Apple Watch hardware updates in 2026, while some predict an all-glass redesign in 2028.
The pattern in these reports is consistent: first. Apple’s upgrade plans for Series 12 are described as light on both hardware and software beyond targeted additions (like a new Watch face) and broad maintenance (fixes and security updates). then later expectations narrow further. suggesting minimal changes again in 2026 before a bigger redesign is possible in 2028.
