While there’s no doubt that the theatrical marketplace is booming this year thanks to blockbusters of all shapes and sizes, let’s not forget the continued success of the streaming industry. For every Spider-Man: Brand New Day there is an I Will Find You, which emerged as one of Netflix’s biggest-ever hits, and for every Obsession, there is an Apple TV sensation that rode a wave of positive buzz to incredible critical acclaim and viewership success. The series in question found a spot on the Nielsen chart in the week of its finale, which is a rare occurrence for an Apple TV title. Not long afterward, it received 19 nominations at the Emmys, including in the Outstanding Comedy Series category.
Apple TV has had a terrific year so far, with breakout new shows such as Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, Margo’s Got Money Problems, and Star City. The streamer recently welcomed back its biggest breakout hit, Ted Lasso, for a fourth season that nearly never happened. However, the streamer’s biggest hit of the year has to be Widow’s Bay. The horror-comedy series unfolds in a mysterious New England town whose residents are convinced that it is a hotbed of supernatural activity. Widow’s Bay is presented from the perspective of the town’s mayor, played by Matthew Rhys in an Emmy-nominated performance.

Apple TV’s 2026 Masterpiece Received Near-Unanimous Praise
According to FlixPatrol, the show has now spent more than 100 days on the domestic Apple TV viewership chart, having premiered in April and concluded its 10-episode first season in July. The show was created by Parks and Recreation alum Katie Dippold, who combined horror lore with absurd comedy in a combination rarely seen these days. Widow’s Bay received near-unanimous praise upon release, and it now holds a “Certified Fresh” 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website’s consensus reads, “Katie Dippold successfully continues to invest in eccentricity with this outlandish horror-comedy that stokes the genre’s well-worn tropes to winning effect, bringing scares, laughs, and a game cast.” The series has already been renewed for a second season.
