Apple TV and HomePod mini updates wait for Siri

Apple’s next wave of home upgrades is being held back for the fall—not because the hardware isn’t ready, but because the software plans depend on a revamped Siri and new Apple Intelligence features. An Apple TV chip refresh is expected, while HomePod mini is s

By the time Apple employees at Apple Park are done using the devices they’ve already been actively testing. the rest of the world will still have to wait. This fall. Apple’s home hardware is set to get a shake-up—but the updates for both Apple TV and HomePod mini are reportedly being delayed until Apple can ship them alongside a major Siri overhaul.

Mark Gurman’s “Power On” newsletter for Bloomberg on Sunday says Apple has had refreshed hardware for the two models sitting for months. The devices are not theoretical anymore. They’re reportedly already being actively used by Apple employees at Apple Park—evidence that the physical upgrades are in place. even if the public rollout isn’t.

The reason for the pause is software. Apple apparently held back the launch because it wants to pair the hardware refresh with the long-awaited revamp of Siri and new Apple Intelligence features. The plan is to make the fall release feel like one combined moment instead of two separate launches. with the Siri upgrade providing the real payoff.

Apple TV won’t change much on the outside. The report says it’s expected to get a performance boost, with a chip upgrade “almost certain,” and possibly a slightly improved remote. But the Apple TV enclosure won’t change.

HomePod mini is where the shift is expected to be more noticeable—at least in what it can do. The update is described as an internally-focused glow-up: outside. the HomePod mini is expected to look pretty identical to the current spherical model. Inside, however, its S5 chip will be updated to something much newer.

The availability problem is already real for consumers. The report says the HomePod mini is suffering from limited availability, both online and at retail. That makes the timing of the Siri-driven software push even more consequential: people who can’t always get the device are effectively waiting not just for stock. but for the improvements that will make Siri and Apple Intelligence matter.

The common thread across both products is what the refreshed hardware is meant to enable. While the changes are described as chiefly spec-bump updates. the report says they should also allow the models to work with new Apple Intelligence and Siri features. For Apple. it’s a familiar rhythm: wait until the experience is ready. then ship the hardware that can run it.

Even without new visible design language. the sequence of facts is hard to miss: refreshed Apple TV and HomePod mini units have already been in use internally for months. but Apple chose to hold them back until software—including the revamp of Siri and new Apple Intelligence features—can arrive in the same fall launch window.

As for where things stand now, the expectation is set for autumn. Apple has reportedly sat on new hardware for Apple TV and HomePod mini for months. with the public release tied to a Siri upgrade and Apple Intelligence push. Apple TV is expected to get a chip refresh and possibly a slightly improved remote. while HomePod mini is expected to move to an updated S5 chip—positioned to unlock the new Siri and Apple Intelligence features that Apple wants to launch all at once.

  1. I swear every Apple update is just “wait till fall” and then it’s like 3% faster. If the Siri upgrade is the big deal why not just push the software now? Seems backwards.

  2. Honestly I think it’s more about Apple testing it in-house and making sure it doesn’t explode. Like they said Apple Park employees are using them already so hardware is basically done. Then they delay it for “Apple Intelligence” which sounds like marketing to me.

  3. Wait Siri overhaul = new HomePod mini? I saw another post that said Siri won’t work with older devices, which is why they’re holding it back. Also Apple TV chip refresh… does that mean my remote stops working? I’m confused but I feel like they always find a way to make you upgrade something.
