Apple readies refreshed Apple TV and HomePod mini

refreshed Apple – Apple appears to be preparing updated versions of the Apple TV set-top box and the HomePod mini for a launch later this fall. Internal progress is being driven by Apple’s next-generation Siri and Apple Intelligence push, with key upgrades focused on AI readine
When Amazon and Google kept accelerating their smart home ecosystems, Apple’s corner of the market sat largely still. For years, Apple’s home hardware—centered on Apple TV and HomePod mini—didn’t meaningfully move. Now that silence looks ready to break.
Apple is preparing updated versions of both the Apple TV set-top box and the HomePod mini. with launches currently planned for later this fall. according to a new report from Mark Gurman. The timing matters because Apple’s home-focused products have largely remained unchanged while rivals expanded their smart home stacks with AI-powered assistants and connected devices.
The renewed push is being framed internally around Apple’s next-generation Siri and Apple Intelligence strategy, a shift that would reposition Apple’s home products around software capability rather than just incremental hardware.
The updated Apple TV, on track but delayed
Bloomberg’s report says Apple’s refreshed Apple TV hardware is essentially complete and nearly ready for release. Gurman adds that Apple had initially planned to launch the refreshed device earlier, but delays tied to Siri and Apple Intelligence moved the schedule further into 2026.
What’s interesting is that the update is not expected to bring dramatic external hardware changes. The big differences are expected to be internal—especially upgrades aimed at AI readiness. Gurman says Apple is focusing on support for newer Siri capabilities and Apple Intelligence features that the current Apple TV hardware cannot fully support.
A key expected upgrade is a newer chip replacing the aging A15 processor that powers the Apple TV 4K. Gurman notes that the existing model has started to feel slower compared to newer Apple hardware, which is part of why a refresh is becoming increasingly necessary.
A more cautious HomePod mini refresh
The HomePod mini is also reportedly getting an update, but Apple appears to be approaching it more conservatively than the Apple TV. Bloomberg says the key change will involve support for Apple’s upgraded Siri and AI features through a newer wireless chip.
The idea is the same across both devices: Apple wants them ready for the Siri and Apple Intelligence changes it’s building, not just cosmetically updated.
Bigger plans beyond two boxes
Apple’s smart home ambition isn’t limited to Apple TV and HomePod mini. Gurman reports the company is still developing a delayed smart home hub featuring a display and facial recognition capabilities, alongside deeper AI integration across Apple’s ecosystem.
Apple is also reportedly working on AI-powered smart glasses and future Siri upgrades. The goal for those Siri updates is described as making Siri behave more like modern conversational AI assistants rather than traditional voice command systems.
One question hangs over the hardware
Apple’s smart home push has increasingly felt stagnant next to competitors. While Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant evolved into broader AI-powered ecosystems, Siri and HomePod products have struggled to keep pace.
With new Apple TV and HomePod mini hardware arriving, the pressure shifts toward what comes after the devices. Users who already own Apple hardware will likely look at how quickly new Siri and Apple Intelligence features actually land—and whether they can keep up in a market that has moved on during Apple’s years of delay.
What’s next for Apple’s AI rollout
Apple is expected to reveal more about its AI roadmap during WWDC and later software announcements tied to iOS 27 and iOS 28.
If Bloomberg’s report holds up. the updated Apple TV and HomePod mini could launch sometime this fall alongside Apple’s broader AI-focused software rollout. The challenge, though, may be more than getting the hardware to the shelf. Apple will need to persuade users that Siri and Apple Intelligence are finally capable of competing in a smart home market that has already advanced—without offering just new devices. but delivering the experience people actually want to use every day.
