Shark Week has arrived and is once again chumming the entertainment waters with programs related to the aquatic predators and their conservation. For those looking for more feature-length thrills about these sharp-toothed ocean dwellers, however, there’s plenty of new films to take a bite out of. From Prime Video’s new film The Devil’s Mouth, following a group of friends trapped in a flooded cave with a ravenous bull shark, to the latest effort from the director of Sharknado, Water Park Shark, July has brought shark thrills and chills of all kinds to screens. However, today marks the theatrical debut of a new film that will introduce an element of crime to the mix.
Above & Below follows five friends on a Mexican shark dive as part of a dream trip full of partying and good vibes. However, everything changes when they find something they were never meant to — a stash of cartel cocaine. The dream becomes a nightmare when criminals ambush them at sea and take them captive, forcing two of the vacationers, Tatiana and Kaley, to recover a bag of drugs from the seafloor. That’s easier said than done when they’re trapped underwater in a shark cage with Great Whites circling and air quickly depleting, but nothing may be quite as dangerous as the cartel members they’re trying to flee. Collider can share an exclusive sneak peek spotlighting Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas as the leader of this gang and a frightening figure who isn’t going to let anyone slip out of his grasp alive.
The footage opens with Banderas’ cartel leader Burns ordering one of his men, Martin, to first apologize to two of the friends for interrupting their dive and then kill them. The second they hear that, both men begin pleading for their lives until a shot is fired, sending Kyle tumbling back dead. Although he said no loose ends, Burns is furious that Martin murdered him without apologizing first, and to show he’s serious, he guides Martin through the apology in a darkly hilarious moment. Their bickering gives the other friend enough time to tackle Martin and take his gun, but that triumphant moment when he seems poised to threaten his way out of a deadly situation is short-lived. Another cartel member rides up on another boat and unceremoniously guns him down before he can get any further.
