Anthony Gordon jets to Barcelona for £70m medical

Anthony Gordon has flown from Newcastle to Barcelona on a private jet to complete his £70million move, with a medical scheduled later today. The winger arrives after Barcelona beat Liverpool and Bayern Munich to his signature, ending months of uncertainty that

Anthony Gordon was already moving on before the deal was even signed.

The Newcastle International Airport runway became the last stop of his old routine when the 25-year-old set off at 11.10am by private jet to Barcelona. He landed in Spain in the early afternoon, and later today he is due to undergo a medical as the final step in his £70million transfer.

Barcelona’s push for the England winger is the headline, but the timing is what makes it feel like a door closing. He is expected to be assessed after Barcelona beat Liverpool and Bayern Munich in the race for his signature, with Sporting director Deco having met with his representatives on Monday.

On Wednesday, it emerged that Barca had agreed a £70m deal for Gordon—structured with bonuses and a future percentage of any sale for Newcastle.

His path to this point had been shaped by limits and leverage. Gordon’s camp had spoken to both Barcelona and Bayern over the course of weeks, and the framework of personal terms with Bayern had been in place for several weeks. But the Bundesliga club would not go beyond their £60m valuation.

For Newcastle, Gordon’s departure arrives after a season that ended with him as the club’s top scorer on 18 goals. Yet he also disappeared from the final stretch—failing to feature in the final six games of the campaign as talk intensified over his future.

The gap between what Everton are owed and what Newcastle are losing underlines how big this transfer is beyond the headlines. Everton have a sell-on clause that will see them receive 15 per cent of the profit after they sold Gordon to Newcastle for £45m in 2023.

Now, the money and the momentum are shifting the spotlight onto who else Barca might want to move next.

Marcus Rashford—currently impressing on loan from Manchester United—has become the inevitable comparison. The only inhibition appearing to hold back Barcelona from signing Rashford permanently is financial. so it is a surprise that the club is preparing to splash a much more significant outlay on Gordon.

Barca still intend to discuss a deal for Rashford with Manchester United this week, but their objective is to secure another loan. Hansi Flick’s side also have until June 15 to trigger a clause to buy the England forward for £26m.

Deco’s involvement has also come into focus in the lead-up. He was in London for a series of meetings with potential targets in the days prior to the FA Cup final, and he is understood to have met Gordon’s camp then to state genuine interest.

That stretch of meetings didn’t stop at Gordon, either. Deco also used that opportunity to meet Joao Pedro’s agents, but Chelsea have no desire to sell—closing off one route Barca explored.

As for Liverpool, their interest in Gordon has been longstanding, but they will now have to turn their attention elsewhere. While they were out of the running. they have been weighing other targets. with RB Leipzig’s £85m-rated Yan Diomande and Paris St Germain’s Bradley Barcola identified as options.

Gordon’s own history with Liverpool adds a layer of unfinished business to this story. He came close to joining Liverpool two years ago. when a medical was set up in Germany while he was on international duty at Euro 2024. Newcastle ultimately pulled the plug on the deal after selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest instead.

Now, with a private jet flight already completed and the medical expected later today, the latest chapter looks far more final.

And for Eddie Howe—who said the decision over Gordon’s future was what was keeping him out of the team—the final result is arriving quickly. In the short time since he left Newcastle. the conversations that once dragged on have been replaced by the next stage: Barcelona’s checks. and the moment the £70m move becomes official.

  1. So he just dipped to Barcelona on a private jet and that’s the whole update? I mean I get it’s football money but still. Also “door closing”?? like Newcastle is shutting a door on him or what.

  2. Isn’t this the guy who disappeared for the last games? Now he’s magically worth 70m and getting bonuses and sale percentages lol. The whole Everton owed part is confusing though, like who even gets the money if he gets sold later?

  3. Private jet to do a medical later today… that seems like the rich person version of skipping work and showing up for the “final step.” I saw something on TikTok that he already signed, so this feels like clickbait timing. Also Barcelona beat Liverpool and Bayern to his signature like that automatically makes the deal good? Idk, football is weird.
