The claim was that Guthrie’s remains were buried in a shallow grave. It was serious enough to prompt a massive search led by Buscando Corazones Nogales. a volunteer group that searches for missing people. Law enforcement sources say it is unclear who in the group received the original tip that sent volunteers running to investigate it.
FBI agents were not dispatched because they do not have jurisdiction in Mexico. Even without federal involvement, Buscando Corazones Nogales scrambled to the area shortly after receiving the tip, searching there during the week.
Nancy has been missing since she was abducted from her Tucson home in early February. Tucson is about 70 miles from the search area, underscoring how far the hunt had stretched after the tip surfaced.
Photos from the search showed volunteers scouring the land, working with an apparent police officer, and taking photos among the trees.
The volunteer group said it found over 25 unmarked graves during the search—but nothing connected to Nancy Guthrie.
While the Mexico tip has not produced answers, the demand for answers at home has not eased. Nancy’s family, including her daughter Savannah Guthrie, is still offering a $1 million reward for information about her disappearance.
