Their wedding, Hathaway and Shulman have kept deliberately understated. Around a year later, they tied the knot in Big Sur, California, on September 29, 2012. People reported that it was an understated affair: Hathaway wore no jewelry. and among the 150 guests there were no A-list stars. A guest told People: “It was just friends and family.” The guest added that there were only a few people in the business. such as her stunt double.

Their first son, Jonathan, was born in 2016, and their second son, Jack, was born in 2019.

Hathaway has described motherhood as a turning point in how she shows up in her own life. In March 2022. she told WSJ Magazine: “I didn’t feel fully landed and fully here until I was a mom.” She added. “It’s not like I was lacking integrity. but it made me want to be completely. on every level. true to my word.”.

Even as her family grows, Hathaway keeps the details of daily life away from the spotlight. She told Porter in November 2023 that her public and private lives are intentionally separate: “My family has needs, and one of the needs of children is that they need to be able to define their own lives.”

She also said she doesn’t think the boundary is complicated: “It doesn’t even occur to me to link the two up, except through gratitude that they serve each other so beautifully. But they serve each other through me, and not through a space that’s outside of myself.”

One example of that boundary: Hathaway didn’t reveal Jack’s name in public until 11 months after he was born, during an appearance on “Live with Kelly and Ryan.”
