Android Canary 2606 lands on Pixels with new theming

Google has released Android Canary 2606 for testers, now rolling out to Pixel 6 and later. The update adds a new theming slider, quick style buttons, a Quick Settings tile for switching keyboards, and improved lock-screen blur behind the fingerprint scanner an

For testers holding out for the next little glimpse of what Android might become, the wait didn’t even last a full month.

Android Canary 2606 is already available, and this time it’s aimed squarely at Pixel devices. The release is landing just weeks after Google’s May Canary update, which means the bleeding edge is moving faster than most people can keep track of.

The most visible change is theming. A new slider lets users set the dominant color for their theme. and a set of four style buttons makes it easier to jump between different looks without digging through menus. It’s the kind of update that sounds small on paper. but matters immediately for anyone who wants the phone to match their mood—or their wallpaper—without turning the settings screen into a project.

There’s also a new convenience feature in the Quick Settings panel. Canary 2606 adds a Quick Settings tile designed as a shortcut for changing keyboards, which will matter to people who switch input methods often and don’t want to hunt through settings every time.

On the lock screen, Google is also making a subtle but noticeable UI adjustment. The fingerprint scanner area and the screen-bottom buttons are now getting proper background blur effects. It’s a refinement that. while easy to miss at first glance. changes how the lock screen blends into whatever is behind it.

As with other Canary releases, Android Canary 2606 is available for Pixel 6 and later hardware. Testers can install it by using the appropriate Canary image for their device with Google’s Android flash tool. The process comes with the usual warning: back everything up first, because flashing means losing all data.

Google’s Mishaal Rahman shared the expectations for what’s included in this build on X. and for now the update is focused on these theming and UI improvements. If more changes surface after installation. they’ll be tracked as they do with every Canary drop—but for the moment. the message is clear: the next wave of Android customization is already here.
