French Open champion Mirra Andreeva left in tears after being knocked out in the Wimbledon second round by Barbora Krejcikova, then throwing her racquet away and mouthing “I quit.” Krejcikova moved on after a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 win, while Andreeva faced a public mo

Mirra Andreeva didn’t just lose on Centre Court at Wimbledon — she struggled to hold herself together as the moment slipped away.

The French Open champion was taken to three sets by Barbora Krejcikova. the 2024 champion. and after the 6-4. 7-5. 6-4 defeat. Andreeva hurled her racquet in disgust. At the net. she still stopped to congratulate Krejcikova and accept consoling words from the Czech player. but the raw aftermath played out in front of the cameras.

During her post-match press conference. Andreeva was overcome with tears as she admitted she would need time before she could properly reset. After composing herself. she said: “Sorry.” She then added that she would “need a couple of days” to reflect. explaining: “Yeah. it’s going to take some time. maybe a couple of days. and then I’m going to be back to practice for hard courts. “I don’t know what my next tournaments are going to be. I still need to talk to my team to see where I’m going to play next.”.

The 19-year-old’s frustration spilled beyond the baseline. Moments after the match, she mouthed “I QUIT” to her box. In more troubling scenes during play, she even smacked herself in the head with her racquet on a frustrating afternoon. She was also helped by members of the grounds staff to pick up beads after a bracelet she was wearing snapped in the third set. spilling them across the court. Andreeva was then given a hindrance call.

Her temperament has been a storyline of its own. During her three-set defeat while defending her Indian Wells title in March, she smashed her racquet to pieces. At Indian Wells, she also told the crowd “f*** you all” in an uncontrollable outburst. And in Madrid, when she emotionally told herself, “I’m not a champion. I’m not a champion. I will lose. I will lose,” she still fought back to claim victory in three tight sets against Anna Bondar.

At Wimbledon, the tension was still there when the match ended. Andreeva’s racquet abuse — especially on the pristine first-week turf of Centre Court — can carry a fine. In 2023, Novak Djokovic was handed a £6,117 penalty after smashing his racquet against a net post. When contacted for comment. the All England Club said: “At Grand Slams possible fines are determined and issued by the Grand Slam supervisors in due course.”.

After the dust settled. there was also a suggestion that Andreeva had been distracted by England’s winning goal during the third set. She strongly denied it in her press conference when she was asked about the match-time noise. “I didn’t know that,” Andreeva said when told there was an England match being played during her match. “I didn’t feel like they were super loud.” She added: “They did it when she was still going to the baseline to return. so it didn’t bother me at all. I didn’t feel like it was super loud, as well.”.

While Andreeva grappled with what went wrong. Krejcikova — the 30-year-old who became a Wimbledon champion in 2024 — carried the calm of someone who has learned to absorb setbacks. Speaking during her on-court interview after the win. she said: “It’s definitely special (winning today).” She continued: “I have been through a lot with injuries and my personal life. The last couple months were really hard to get through with the emotions of what has happened.”.

“But, I put lots of work and dedication in every single day. I try to go day by day. Thank you to my team in the box and everyone who stays back in Czech Republic.”

Krejcikova’s comeback has not been straightforward. Her post-Wimbledon run has been dotted with injury issues. and most recently she was forced to concede the Libema Open title at ’s-Hertogenbosch after withdrawing with a respiratory illness. Against Andreeva on Centre Court. she did what she needed to do: convert the pressure into a three-set finish that ended the French Open champion’s Wimbledon campaign in the second round.

  1. Sounds like she broke down from stress. But also why would you smack yourself with a racquet like that? Then cameras are just watching, super awkward.

  2. Wait so Krejcikova “moved on” like that’s a whole thing lol. I thought racquet fury meant she was winning and then got mad? The score 7-5 6-4?? Either way tennis players are wild.

  3. I get being upset but I feel like this is exactly why people say athletes are too emotional now. She threw the racquet, mouthed I quit, then taking days to practice hard courts?? Like shouldn’t she just switch to clay or whatever and be done with it. Also the bracelet beads snapping across the court is kinda random… wonder if that threw her off or whatever.
