Analogue Pocket EverDrive cartridges fail on newer batches

EverDrive compatibility – EverDrive flash cartridges are reportedly struggling on newer Analogue Pocket units. The EverDrive maker says it’s a hardware issue on the handheld, while other reports point to component changes in newer EverDrive Mini models—leaving retro players stuck in th
For retro gamers, the Analogue Pocket has been a kind of promise: modern handheld convenience for old-game authenticity. But a new problem is breaking that promise in a very specific way—EverDrive flash cartridges reportedly aren’t working properly on newer variants of the device.
Krikzz, the maker behind EverDrive, says the failure isn’t software or user error. In a forum post flagged by an Analogue Pocket owner. Krikzz describes what happens when the system tries to update data on the cartridge’s storage. “When the system writes to a file. it reads the sector containing the directory information. applies the required modifications. and writes the sector back. However, in the new AP, some bits become corrupted for an unknown reason, resulting in damaged file system sectors.”.
Krikzz also draws a comparison that matters to anyone trying to diagnose hardware problems: “It seems like some hardware related problem. With same firmware version old AP works well. but AP from new batch does not work.” In other words. the difference appears to be the Pocket itself—newer units. same firmware.
Analogue has been contacted about the issue. In what appears to be the company’s response, Analogue directs owners to the cartridge and accessory makers for troubleshooting. “For support with modern 3rd party games. accessories and other devices – please contact the manufacturer for troubleshooting and information with Analogue products. Analogue does not provide customer support for 3rd party devices.” The message continues the idea that while Analogue covers the formats it supports. it can’t be expected to troubleshoot every third-party add-on.
But the story doesn’t settle there. Other reports suggest the issue might not originate on the Pocket side at all. Conflicting information points toward newer EverDrive Minis, specifically component changes that could be affecting compatibility. One user account included a “quick clarification”: “I’ve received conflicting information from different sources. Some are suggesting the issue may be related to component changes in newer EverDrive Minis. while others believe it could be related to changes on the Pocket side.”.
That’s the uncomfortable part for players: even inside the community trying to help each other. the direction of blame isn’t agreed upon. Krikzz emphasizes corrupted file system sectors in the “new AP,” claiming older Pocket units work fine under the same firmware. Analogue’s response, meanwhile, frames third-party support as something for the accessory maker. And then other accounts bring EverDrive Minis’ internal changes into the discussion.
The only shared ground is the outcome—newer Analogue Pocket variants aren’t behaving consistently with EverDrive flash cartridges—and the urgency behind it. Retro gamers don’t usually buy these devices just once; they build libraries around reliable cartridge support. When that support becomes uncertain, it doesn’t just disrupt play—it strands hardware that was supposed to be future-proof.

So basically the new Pocket breaks old carts? That’s wild.
I swear these companies always “point fingers” at each other. If it’s the handheld, why did they even release another batch like that??
Wait, when you said “hardware issue” I’m thinking firmware update bricked it. Like the system updates the cartridge and corrupts stuff… sounds like user error to me lol. Unless firmware is actually different between batches?
Not to be that guy but Analogue saying “contact the cartridge maker” is such a cop out. If I bought the Pocket, shouldn’t it just work with the stuff everyone says works with it? I’m guessing the new units have different storage writes or something, but then everyone’s gonna blame each other and retro people get stuck paying twice.
