An unknown ‘wild animal’ has been attacking people in this NH town

Police in Lebanon, N.H., are warning the public about an unknown animal in the Centerra Parkway area, with at least three reported attacks since Sept. 30.

The Lebanon Police Department describes the animal as either a gray fox or a fisher cat — a carnivorous mammal that, contrary to its name, is a member of the weasel family. Officers haven’t come across the animal and can’t confirm what it is, but in a news release Tuesday they noted it is “unusually aggressive.”

A video circulating online from Lebanon Police shows the animal run at two people exiting a U-Haul van in a parking lot. The animal jumps on one person’s leg, and the person has to shake it off several times. 

The release warns about potential rabies exposure in animals that act unusual or aggressive. If someone is bitten or scratched by a wild animal, they should wash the area with soap and water and seek medical attention, according to the release.

“Residents, employees, and visitors in the Centerra Parkway area are urged to use caution and remain aware of their surroundings, particularly when walking near wooded, brush-covered, or other areas where wildlife may be present,” the release reads. 

The first attack occurred Sunday, and it was believed to be unprovoked, according to the release. At least two more attacks have been reported, with the latest being Monday evening. 

The Lebanon Police Department is coordinating with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, according to the release. They suggest contacting police if they encounter the animal.
