Two American men have been arrested after a stunt saw a visitor climb into the enclosure of Punch, a baby macaque at Ichikawa City Zoo outside Tokyo that has drawn online fame.

The incident happened on Sunday. shortly after 11am. when a man dressed in a cartoonish blue suit and an oversized yellow emoji head scaled the 1.5m fence around Punch’s enclosure.. Police say the intruder entered the animal’s area in front of other visitors. carrying a doll matching the costume and trying to stop the costume’s head from falling off.. A second man, who was reportedly filming, shared footage of the encounter on social media as it unfolded.

Zoo staff detained both men soon afterwards and kept them away from the animals.. A police spokesman said neither suspect got close to the monkeys during the disruption. and noted that around 60 monkeys. including Punch. were inside the enclosure at the time.. The Ichikawa Police Department identified the suspects as 24-year-old student Reid Jahnai Dayson and Neal Jabahri Duan. 27. who said he was a singer.

Both men now face charges of forcible obstruction of business, which they deny, a police official said.

The zoo, in a statement posted on X, apologised for what it called an intrusion.. “We apologize for the concern caused by yesterday’s intrusion into the monkey enclosure,” it said.. “No abnormalities were observed among the animals.” The zoo added that it filed a police report with the Ichikawa Police Station on the night of the incident. and that “from tomorrow onwards. we will continue to prioritize the safety and health of the animals and take appropriate measures. while strictly addressing any rule violations.”

The uproar comes as Punch’s popularity has already reshaped visitor behaviour at the zoo.. Earlier this year. the baby macaque went viral after being seen clutching an orangutan plushie given to him as a substitute after his mother rejected him at birth.. The zoo says it introduced rules to cope with demand. telling attendees to stay quiet and to limit viewing to 10 minutes to reduce stress for Punch and the dozens of other monkeys in the enclosure.

Keeping Punch safe has also been a daily challenge for staff as his needs change.. Zookeepers say they nursed Punch and gave him the plushie to help him learn to cling. an ability newborn macaques need to survive.. While he initially slept with the toy every night. the months since the incident have brought a shift: Punch has begun to outgrow the toy as he socialises with adult monkeys.. “Helping Punch learn the rules of monkey society and being accepted as a member is our most important task. ” said Kosuke Kano. a 24-year-old zookeeper.

The picture that emerges from these events is a chain of escalating attention: Punch’s online fame led to visitor surges and viewing limits. and then. despite those rules. a man scaled the 1.5m enclosure fence and entered while carrying a matching doll—prompting police action and a fresh pledge to prioritise safety and health after the zoo filed a report.

For now, the zoo says there were no abnormalities among the animals during the disruption.. Prosecutors will now have to work through charges of forcible obstruction of business. which both men deny. as the incident reopens questions about how to protect the monkeys from fans willing to cross clear boundaries.
