América closes in on its new No. 9 as talks for Miguel Borja reach the final stretch

Club América’s push to strengthen internal competition has taken a major leap forward, with negotiations between the Azulcremas and Al Wasl of the UAE Pro League — currently coached by André Jardine — reportedly entering the final stage.

According to journalist César Luis Merlo, both clubs are close to sealing the agreement. América is expected to acquire Miguel Borja’s rights outright, and the 33‑year‑old forward would sign a long‑term contract.

Borja was on the verge of joining Cruz Azul for the Clausura 2026, but delays in freeing up a foreign‑player slot blocked the move — even after he and his family had already settled temporarily in Mexico City.

América finds its new No. 9

América currently leads the Liga MX Apertura 2026, and after the recent win over Atlético San Luis, head coach Guillermo Almada admitted that while he’s satisfied with the squad, certain positions still needed precise reinforcements — especially the center‑forward role.

Henry Martín remains the starter, a historic club scorer who missed much of 2025 due to physical issues. Behind him, Patricio Salas and Alejandro “Coco” Cárdenas continue to develop, while José Raúl “Pantera” Zúñiga has been completely removed from Almada’s plans.

Borja arrives with solid numbers: 16 matches for Al Wasl, eight goals, and 984 minutes played. If the transfer becomes official, this will be his first experience in Mexican soccer after a long career across South America.

What Borja brings to América

  • Experience — A veteran striker with years across top South American leagues.
  • Physical presence — A classic No. 9 profile that América has been missing.
  • Immediate impact potential — His scoring rate at Al Wasl suggests he can contribute right away.

What’s next?

América expects to finalize the deal soon, giving Almada the striker he’s been asking for. If confirmed, Borja’s arrival would add depth, experience, and a new competitive spark to a team already leading the league.
