Amazon cancels Stargate series reboot aimed at wider fans

Amazon cancels – Amazon has canceled its newly planned Stargate series reboot after internal concerns that it would appeal mainly to hardcore fans. The project, initially announced last November and developed by Martin Gero, was set to be led by executive producer Joseph Mallo

Amazon’s attempt to bring the Stargate universe back to television has hit a hard stop. The fledgling series that was announced last November has been canceled, with the decision driven by worry that it wouldn’t reach beyond dedicated franchise viewers.

Variety reported the cancellation, and it quickly echoed through the project’s own creative team. Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi wrote on X: “Sadly, it’s true. Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate seeries. As of today, officially, that original vision is no more. We’ll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters — or reintroduce you to and check in with some familiar faces from the past.”.

The timing carries its own sting. Amazon’s new Stargate effort had been built on a major acquisition: the company purchased MGM. then began looking to develop projects in the Stargate universe starting in 2022. Using a recognizable sci-fi franchise seemed like a practical move as well. Amazon’s space for hit science fiction has been thinner since The Expanse ended in 2022.

What makes the cancellation especially painful for fans is that the new series wasn’t just meant to continue the franchise—it was pitched as a bridge. Mallozzi said Martin Gero developed the series over two years. “ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon.” Yet Amazon executives were said to be worried the end result would still only appeal to hardcore Stargate fans. rather than earning a broader audience.

No details about the plot were ever announced, including where it would sit in the Stargate timeline. For now, all that exists publicly is the promise of something new built from an old world—and the abrupt reality that it won’t reach screens.

The Stargate franchise itself is built around the titular Stargates: transportation devices made by ancient aliens that function as galaxy-spanning wormholes. It began with a 1994 movie starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. That was followed by the Stargate SG-1 series starring Richard Dean Anderson. The franchise later expanded into four other television shows and two direct-to-video movies.

With the planned reboot now officially dead, the question for Amazon is immediate and personal at the same time: whether the path to sci-fi success runs through familiar fan loyalty—or through something that can break out beyond it.

  1. So they canceled it because “hardcore fans” only? That sounds like execs just don’t know how fandoms work. Stargate already has new stuff in it, they couldn’t just market it right?

  2. I don’t buy the “couldn’t reach beyond dedicated viewers” thing. Sounds more like they were scared it wouldn’t beat Marvel numbers. Also Mallozzi saying “reintroduce you to and check in with some familiar faces” makes it sound like it was gonna be nothing new anyway.

  3. Wait, Amazon bought MGM and then just… stopped? That’s wild. I feel bad for anyone excited, but at the same time The Expanse ended so now they’re just like, “maybe space is cursed.” Also I read somewhere this was gonna be in the timeline after SG-1?? but now there’s literally no plot, so cool cool.
