Amanda Gutierres stoppage-time PK gives Legacy win

stoppage-time penalty – Amanda Gutierres scored in stoppage time as Boston Legacy FC beat Orlando 2-1, extending its unbeaten run to four games.

A stoppage-time penalty kick decided the moment, and Boston Legacy FC didn’t waste it.

Amanda Gutierres converted a penalty kick deep into added time to give Legacy a 2-1 win over the Orlando Pride on Tuesday night at Gillette Stadium. extending the club’s unbeaten streak to four games.. The match drew 8,182 fans as the inaugural-season side followed another late win, the latest in a growing pattern of resilience.

Boston’s victory came after a difficult start.. Legacy had opened its inaugural campaign with five consecutive losses. but it has since begun to find consistency. with Tuesday night marking just the second win of the season.. The other win was a 3-2 decision over Denver on May 4. showing how quickly the team’s results have shifted since the early setbacks.

Gutierres’s stoppage-time goal was also a milestone for her personally.. It was the Brazilian striker’s first NWSL goal. arriving after she was viewed as one of Boston’s most highly touted scorers but had yet to get on the scoresheet this season.. Her composure on the penalty helped define a finish that came at exactly the time Boston needed it most.

Coach Filipa Patão said the moment reflected both the competitive intensity and the decision-making the team had been working to bring to the field.. She described Gutierres as composed in the penalty situation and suggested the squad showed the necessary intelligence in how they fought through the match.

The circumstances behind the decisive spot kick were confirmed by VAR. After a Boston corner kick, officials ruled that Orlando committed a hand ball in the penalty area, awarding Boston the penalty. The call set up the late conversion that ultimately turned the game.

Gutierres’s impact wasn’t limited to the final minutes.. She was involved in Boston’s equalizer in the 72nd minute, when the team was trailing 1-0.. With Legacy behind. Gutierres headed a long ball down to Aleigh Gambone at the top of the box. and Gambone finished with a volley for her first NWSL goal.

The momentum shift after halftime also owed something to the substitutions.. Gutierres entered the game as a second-half replacement in the 57th minute, while Gambone came on in the 65th.. Patão credited the fresh legs with helping the team make better decisions and execute more effectively. particularly as the match developed.

Legacy’s approach in the middle and late portions of the game featured a largely controlling rhythm. including keeping Orlando out of the attacking third for much of the contest.. Even with that control. Orlando found the breakthrough first. and Boston’s response required the late surge that carried the win.

Orlando scored in the 14th minute when the officiating team awarded a penalty after ruling that Aïssata Traoré committed a holding foul in the box. Marta then converted the penalty, sending Orlando ahead 1-0 and establishing what would become the game’s early lead.

After that opening goal, the Brazilian star Marta was replaced at halftime by the league’s top scorer, Barbara Banda. Banda entered with eight goals to her name, and Orlando’s shape changed after she came on, with the Pride starting to play a more transitional style.

Banda remained in the game for the remainder of the match. but Legacy’s defense managed to keep her from adding to her season tally.. With the league’s leading scorer scoreless in the second half. Boston’s ability to adapt to Orlando’s shifting tactics became a key element in preventing the deficit from widening.

Patão said the team needed to adjust in real time, including being prepared for the type of game Orlando’s lineup changes could create. As Banda’s introduction altered Orlando’s approach, Patão responded with five substitutions aimed at meeting the challenge of a more transitional opponent.

There was also a return that stood out for Boston.. Defender Nicki Hernandez saw her first action since suffering a lower-body injury during Legacy’s inaugural match on March 14. taking Nichelle Prince’s place in the 75th minute.. Hernandez said the difference on the day was noticeable not only in the intensity. but in what she described as the team’s intelligence—tackling hard and giving maximum effort.

For Hernandez, the improvement since her last appearance reflected how the team has continued to mature as the season progresses. Her return also added another layer to Boston’s late-game push, occurring during the period when match details often narrow to execution under pressure.

Taken together, Tuesday night’s result underscored the direction Legacy has been moving in after the early struggles. The combination of late-game decision-making, effective substitution timing, and the ability to respond after conceding helps explain why the unbeaten run has grown to four games.

It also offers a clear picture of what comes next for Boston as it builds on momentum: sustaining that same composure when matches hinge on fine margins. and continuing to translate changes in opponent tactics into immediate adjustments.. For Orlando. the loss still came after a strong start. but the late collapse—including the VAR-awarded penalty—will likely refocus attention on how the Pride close out games when pressure mounts.

  1. wait i thought boston didnt even have a womens team?? like when did this happen lol my sister lives there and never mentioned it. also 8000 fans thats actually not bad i guess

  2. honestly hand ball calls in the box are so inconsistent these days like sometimes a girl cant even move her arm without getting called and then other times they literally grab the ball and refs just stand there. orlando got robbed plain and simple. and im not even an orlando fan i just watched the highlights and the hand was clearly like not intentional at all. the whole sport needs to just go back to letting the game play out without all this video review nonsense stopping everything every five minutes. also wasnt gutierres supposed to be some big signing and she hadnt scored yet before this so i mean good for her but the pressure must of been crazy

  3. so they lost like 5 games in a row and now theyre acting like this is some big comeback story lol they still have a losing record right?? two wins is not a streak boston fans are so dramatic every single time
