When opening statements begin Monday in Suffolk Superior Court, the case against Alvin Campbell Jr.. will be measured against a timeline that has already stretched for years.. Prosecutors say Campbell, 45, assaulted nine women between 2017 and 2019, frequently posing as a rideshare driver to target women leaving Boston bars.

Campbell—Andrea Campbell’s brother—stands accused on multiple counts, including rape, kidnapping, and indecent assault and battery. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The trial’s start comes after a series of postponements that began with his initial arrest in January 2020. Monday’s proceedings mark the first time the arguments over guilt or innocence will be presented publicly in court, with attorneys laying out their competing versions of what happened.

In a statement shared last week. AG Andrea Campbell said she is “praying for the survivors and all those affected” as her brother’s trial begins.. She added. “This is an incredibly difficult situation for everyone involved. and I carry that weight with me. including in my prayers for my brother. ” and that “The case is now before the court. and I respect the judicial process as it moves forward.”

The case has been held up multiple times since Campbell’s January 2020 arrest. and Monday’s opening statements are described as the beginning of a trial that has been “several years in the making.” The pattern of delay is mirrored by the breadth of allegations—nine victims. multiple felony categories—and will now be addressed directly through opening arguments over whether the prosecution’s account will hold.

In December 2024, Campbell was seated during a hearing at Suffolk Superior Court in Boston.. Monday’s opening statements are expected to set the terms for the fight that follows: whether the court will accept prosecutors’ account of assaults tied to impersonating a rideshare driver. or instead hear a defense that disputes the charges.
