Allen and Holloway clarity lifts Alabama to 3-seed

Alabama rises – Alabama’s roster picture finally came into focus: Amari Allen is back for his sophomore season, Aden Holloway has reached a plea agreement and entered a second-chance program that could lead to charges being dropped. In Joe Lunardi’s latest NCAA Tournament pro

By the time Joe Lunardi updated his early Bracketology outlook for the 2027 NCAA Tournament, Alabama’s two biggest “wait and see” storylines were no longer stuck in limbo.

The last time Lunardi released that kind of early projection on ESPN. the Crimson Tide were still waiting on clarity on Amari Allen’s NBA Draft decision. and there had been no updates on Aden Holloway that pointed toward any outcome as his legal troubles played out. The effect inside the program was obvious: roster planning and expectations couldn’t fully settle while those futures hung in the balance.

Now the picture is different. Allen is officially back in the fold for his sophomore season. Holloway has reached a plea agreement and entered a second-chance program that could get all charges against him dropped. That matters because it turns uncertainty into a functional rotation—something Alabama needed heading into the dog days of summer.

In Lunardi’s latest NCAA Tournament projection, Alabama moves up to a 3-seed. Only two SEC teams are higher-seeded in his bracket update. Florida is listed as the No. 1 overall seed. Lunardi also put stock in John Calipari’s next stop, ranking Arkansas on the 2-line with the Razorbacks.

The shift is small on paper—3 instead of 4—but it carries real weight because it signals a change in confidence across the conference. Texas is also projected as a 3-seed, joining Alabama in a pair that rounds out what Lunardi and the broader landscape are treating as a top tier for next season.

For Alabama. the other part of the story is how quickly Nate Oats used the offseason to address a weakness that showed up most when games got physical and deep in the frontcourt. Oats did “excellent work” in the Transfer Portal to fix Alabama’s biggest recent issue there. and the Crimson Tide got bigger across the roster.

Holloway and Allen returning do more than stabilize the backcourt. They also change what Alabama can afford to do up front. Holloway is described as the likely only rotational player on the team under 6-foot-6, while depth and versatility are spread through multiple frontcourt options.

The roster overhaul is stark when compared to last year’s limitations. Earlier, Aiden Sherrell had been the only true big on the roster for most of the season. This offseason, Oats landed a trio of bigs in the Transfer Portal: Brandon Garrison, Jamarion Davis-Fleming, and Drew Fielder.

Alabama also retained Keitenn Bristow and Collins Onyejiaka. giving the Crimson Tide five options between the two frontcourt spots before even accounting for the flexibility that came when Alabama played small last season—especially using Allen or London Jemison at the four during their freshman campaigns.

The math of this roster is simple: with Holloway and Allen back to solidify the backcourt. Oats now has depth in the frontcourt and more ways to match up. That. in turn. is why Lunardi can move Alabama up in a projection even while everyone watches the same question—whether this team can translate offseason stability into a championship-level run.

Alabama’s path is set up for a big summer and an even bigger next season. The expectation is no longer just to compete in the SEC. With the roster’s shape clearer than it has been in months. Alabama now looks built to push for an SEC Championship and make a run that gets back to the Final Four for the second time.

  1. A 3-seed already? Lunardi says it like it’s done deal but it’s still early. Also not sure how plea deals translate to basketball momentum but whatever.

  2. Wait, Aden Holloway thing… so charges get dropped automatically like instantly? People online always make it sound like that. Either way I’m just confused why a legal situation affects tournament seeding this much, unless he’s like already playing again.

  3. Calipari already moving Arkansas up to 2 line sounds right, he always recruits like crazy. I don’t buy the whole “uncertainty turns into rotation” stuff though, college players transfer anyway. Florida being #1 overall feels rigged too, like ESPN loves the SEC and that’s it.
