When HBO’s Euphoria finally wrapped up with its third and final season, Alexa Demie was still thinking about the moment her former co-star stepped away years earlier.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on Sunday (May 31), Demie was asked about Barbie Ferreira’s departure from the hit series after just two seasons. “I was bummed, but I really respected her decision, she has to take care of herself,” Demie said.
Ferreira played Kat Hernandez during the first two seasons of Euphoria, before announcing her exit in 2022. At the time, the show was one of HBO’s biggest hits and had earned widespread acclaim—so her decision landed as a surprise for many viewers.
Demie framed Ferreira’s choice as something more than a scheduling change. She described it as “a brave move,” pointing to the fact that Ferreira walked away from a hugely successful series.
That perspective lines up with how Ferreira later described her own departure. Earlier this year, she discussed leaving Euphoria while appearing on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast. Ferreira said conversations about Kat’s future ultimately didn’t produce a path that felt right.
“In fact, it was kind of the opposite of dramatic, where it was a long process of being like, ‘I don’t know if this is it for me,’” Ferreira said. “And then having conversations with people and us trying to figure out how to make Kat a fully fleshed-out character, and it just wasn’t going anywhere.”
