Aldon Smith’s life ended quietly at the weekend—then suddenly for everyone left trying to understand how fast it happened. The former San Francisco 49ers star died at 36, the 49ers announced on Saturday.
Smith was dead on arrival at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California, according to NFL host Chase Senior. No cause of death is yet known.
The 49ers said they were “devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith.” The team noted that it drafted Smith in the 2011 NFL Draft and recalled how “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization. ” pointing to what it called one of the best rookie seasons the NFL had seen. The club added that. beyond football. Smith would be remembered for “his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. ” and sent condolences to the Smith family and to everyone who knew and loved him.
Smith’s NFL career was built on impact and then complicated by legal troubles that followed him through his rise. In nine years, he accumulated 10 arrests. Those included at least four arrests after he was drafted by the 49ers in 2011, and a voluntary move to a treatment facility in 2013.
Among the incidents described were arrests on suspicion of driving under the influence in Miami in 2012 and in San Jose in 2013. the latter involving a crash his car into a tree. In October 2013, he was arrested on three felony charges of possessing illegal assault weapons. While still with San Francisco, he received a nine-game suspension in 2014 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
The 49ers later released Smith after another arrest that came with hit-and-run, DUI and vandalism charges. When he was released in 2014. defensive line coach Jim Tomsula said that he and the organization would keep supporting Smith “on his road to recovery. ” and included a message directed at “everyone else struggling with alcohol and drugs.”.
When he returned from his initial suspension, Smith’s next chapter began with the Oakland Raiders. He signed with the Raiders in September 2015, but his return never fully steadied. In November of that year. the NFL suspended him again—this time for a year—for another violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.
During the period of suspension, more legal trouble surfaced. Smith was transferred to an inpatient rehab center after a domestic violence arrest in 2018, involving an accusation that he bit his fiancée Shawna McKnight’s wrist and fled the scene before officers arrived.
Even after that, Smith still sought a comeback. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell lifted Smith’s suspension in May 2020, allowing him one more attempt to return. Smith then signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2021. Just two days later, he was arrested again in Louisiana on a second-degree battery charge. The Seahawks waived him after that.
With his NFL career effectively over—failing to play again—Smith announced in 2023 on the “I Am Athlete” podcast that he was retiring from the game, saying: “I’m done with ball.”
Before the setbacks, Smith was a standout who looked destined for a long prime. He attended the University of Missouri and was drafted seventh overall by the 49ers in 2011, recording 14 sacks as a rookie. In 2012, he became an All-Pro, finishing with 19 1/2 sacks and helping San Francisco reach the Super Bowl.
Over his first four seasons in San Francisco, Smith totaled 44 sacks in 50 games. At the time, he appeared on track for a major free agent deal—until legal problems forced him out of the league. His stints with the 49ers, Oakland Raiders, and Dallas Cowboys ended in 2020.
Now, with the news of his sudden death at 36, the sport is left holding two truths at once: the dominance he showed on the field, and the turmoil that repeatedly interrupted the career he once looked certain to sustain.
