Aldon Smith was 36. On Saturday, June 13, the San Francisco 49ers used X to confirm the former linebacker’s death—an abrupt blow that immediately shook fans who were still rewatching his best plays.
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the team wrote. The statement added that Smith’s “undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization. ” including a rookie season the 49ers described as among the best the NFL has seen.
The organization also remembered him as more than a player. “Beyond his excellence as a player. Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into.” The 49ers said. “Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”.
An official cause of death has not yet been released.

His rookie campaign earned him second place in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2011. The next season. he was named a first-team All-Pro and earned a Pro Bowl selection after helping lead San Francisco to one of the NFL’s top defenses. Off the field, however, his NFL career was marked by repeated setbacks. In 2014, Smith served a nine-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. The 49ers released him in August 2015 after a DUI arrest.
After that, he moved to the Oakland Raiders, appearing in nine games during the 2015 season and making seven starts. Still, his momentum was interrupted again: after Week 10 of that campaign, the NFL suspended him indefinitely, sidelining him for all of the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Smith’s struggles continued beyond that. In 2018, he was arrested on a domestic violence charge, a development that led to his release from the Raiders. He returned to the NFL with the Cowboys in 2020, starting all 16 games and recording 5.0 sacks.
He later signed with the Seahawks during the 2021 offseason but was released before the start of the regular season.
