Alabama Treasurer Boozer announces CollegeCounts scholarships

CollegeCounts scholarships – Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer says CollegeCounts awarded $1.07 million in scholarships to 403 students across 57 counties.
Alabama’s CollegeCounts Scholarship Program has awarded more than $1 million to help students across the state pursue higher education, State Treasurer and Alabama Savings Board Chair Young Boozer announced Tuesday.
Boozer said the program recently distributed $1.07 million in college scholarships to 403 Alabama students from 57 counties. CollegeCounts, Alabama’s 529 college savings fund, is designed to support in-state higher education and uses scholarship awards targeted to eligible students.
Under the program’s terms, scholarships provide $4,000 for students enrolling in four-year colleges and $2,000 for those enrolling in two-year programs. Recipients must be eligible and pursue higher education at institutions in Alabama.
The scholarships can be used toward a range of education-related costs. including tuition. fees. books. supplies. and equipment required for a student’s course load. with computers also covered.. For students enrolled at least half-time. funds may also be applied to on-campus room and board or off-campus housing when those housing expenses are billed through the school.
Boozer emphasized the program’s funding structure, noting that no taxpayer dollars are used for the CollegeCounts scholarship program. The approach reflects how the 529 fund’s resources are intended to be directed toward college expenses and related support for Alabama students.
In remarks accompanying the announcement. Boozer pointed to the program’s longer-running impact. saying that since 2013 it has awarded $13.8 million to approximately 4. 000 Alabama students attending Alabama colleges.. He framed the scholarships as an investment in the state’s future by helping students access higher education.

my kid applied twice and heard nothing so

This is good news but honestly 4000 dollars for a four year school is basically nothing anymore like have you seen what tuition costs these days. My nephew just started at a state school and his first semester alone was like 9 grand just for classes. I feel like they announced this like its some big thing but when you break it down 403 students split a million dollars thats not even life changing money. Not trying to be negative I just think people need to understand this aint gonna solve the college debt crisis or whatever. Also why only Alabama schools like what if you get into a better program somewhere else.
so they been doing this since 2013 and nobody told me about it when my daughter was applying I had to take out loans and now shes still paying them off this whole time there was free money just sitting there and nobody advertised it at all. I blame the schools honestly they should be telling every single student about this program every year not just hiding it on some website. Thirteen million dollars given out and I never once heard about it from her high school counselor or the college financial aid office not once. This is exactly the kind of thing that makes people distrust the whole system because the people who need it most are always the last to find out.
