Alabama names Keelon Russell starting QB: Why former 5-star could raise Crimson Tide’s ceiling

Alabama’s quarterback competition is over, and the keys to the Crimson Tide offense belong to Keelon Russell. Third-year coach Kalen DeBoer is expected to name Russell as its starting quarterback, sources told CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz on Saturday. The decision to go with Russell over Austin Mack gives Alabama one of college football’s most intriguing young quarterbacks, with the possibility to emerge nationally in the SEC.

Alabama’s hoping Russell — the program’s highest-rated quarterback signee, surpassing Bryce Young — will inject a different dimension into an offense that’s replacing several key pieces.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said earlier this week Alabama’s coaching staff was “close” to making the call between Russell and Mack, keeping the timeline consistent with what DeBoer has stressed throughout the offseason — an expected decision coming after the team’s second fall camp scrimmage.

Russell delivered from a consistency and operational standpoint, showing he can handle the system’s controls during his second season. Russell’s dual-threat ability changes the math for opposing defenses. He can extend plays outside the pocket, punish man coverage with his legs and create explosive opportunities when protection breaks down.

For Mack, it comes as a disappointing end to a competition that extended from spring practice through fall camp. The senior and former Washington transfer played in four games last fall as Ty Simpson’s backup and is entering his third year at Alabama and fourth overall with DeBoer.

Russell does not need to become a finished product immediately, and there will be growing pains, of course. Russell has yet to navigate the pressure that accompanies starting at Alabama, where every decision is dissected, and championship expectations never disappear. But his upside is immense, and DeBoer’s track record with quarterbacks suggests the former five-star prospect will be placed in advantageous situations.

Russell played in two games as a freshman, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Most of his production came against Eastern Illinois, when he was named an offensive player of the week by Alabama’s coaches for his efforts.

A former national Gatorade Player of the Year at Texas power Duncanville High School in the 2025 cycle, Russell won consecutive state titles at the prep level and tallied more than 90 total touchdowns over his final two seasons.

Russell’s not the only new starter on Alabama’s offense. Four holes have been filled up front, and DeBoer expects toughness to return to the Crimson Tide’s running game this fall while this unit tries to establish its identity.

What the Crimson Tide needs is a confident distributor capable of turning broken plays into chunk gains and keeping defenses honest on money downs.  This is part of what makes this quarterback decision so intriguing in Tuscaloosa — Russell offers exactly that.

His selection represents more than a depth-chart decision. It signals Alabama is betting on athleticism, creativity and long-term upside at the most important position on the field.
