Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer’s job security gets attention-grabbing update

There have been questions around the job security of Kalen DeBoer essentially since the day he took the Alabama job.

Alabama football is entering its third season with Kalen DeBoer as the head coach. Last year, Alabama went 11-4 overall after a loss in the Rose Bowl to Indiana in the College Football Playoffs. As the team looks to return to the playoffs in 2026, Alabama is ranked outside the top ten in the preseason AP Top 25 for the first time since 2008.

Regardless, there have still been questions around the job security of DeBoer at Alabama. Now, Rece Davis is giving his thoughts on the security of the coach, talking on the Pat McAfee Show.

Davis was asked which coach had the most sense of urgency this year and had to get off to a hot start.

“I think the easy answer people would say is Kalen DeBoer at Alabama. I don’t think that his job is in any jeopardy, barring some type of empty elevator shaft season. I don’t see that at all. I think they’re going to be pretty good. Will they be a playoff team? I don’t know, but they’ll be good,” Davis said.

Alabama is 20-8 under DeBoer. While the team fell short in 2024, going 9-4 with a loss in the ReliaQuest Bowl, they rebounded the next season. Alabama was 10-2 in the regular season before losing in the SEC Championship game. They then won a playoff game before the Rose Bowl loss. Regardless, expectations are always high for Alabama. Under Nick Saban, they went to the playoffs eight times, won three College Football Playoff national championships and three BCa National Championships.

Saban was 7-6 in his first year, though, then lost in the SEC Championship game his second season before losing in the Sugar Bowl. His third year, they won the BCS National Championship, which is a goal DeBoer hopes to reach this season.

Alabama comes into the season ranked 13th in the nation and will open the year against East Carolina on September 5.
