Aiyuk Fires Back at Daniels as 49ers Standoff Grows

Brandon Aiyuk posted an Instagram story Saturday taking a shot at Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, while the 49ers’ contract standoff and looming trade talks leave his 2026 future in doubt. Aiyuk is still signed to San Francisco’s four-year, $

Brandon Aiyuk didn’t wait for a press conference or a clean, controlled question-and-answer. On Saturday, he posted an Instagram story and turned it into a message aimed at Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.

The clip began with Aiyuk saying, “Probably gonna text me and talk about something.” Then he appeared to mimic Daniels as he continued: “You follow my team now, you follow my rules.”

Aiyuk’s tone sharpened from there. “Boy, I’m a grown-ass man, boy. You gonna have to stop running behind your momma, and I might believe what you talkin’ bout, but until then…” He shook his head no before ending the video.

Daniels has since responded to Aiyuk accordingly, but the bigger point isn’t the back-and-forth itself. It’s what the exchange lands on top of: a summer narrative that’s already been building for weeks, and one that now feels personal.

On Thursday, Aiyuk posted a social media video telling fans that he would be a Commander soon. Last month, he also told fans they could find tickets to see him on the Commanders’ website. Those messages clash with what the 49ers have been doing on the roster and in contract terms.

Right now, Aiyuk is still signed with the 49ers on a four-year, $120 million extension with $76 million in guarantees. He has not played since suffering a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee in October 2024. Before that injury sidelined him, he produced back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023, catching 153 passes and scoring 15 touchdowns across those years. He also helped lead San Francisco to the 2023 NFC title.

But over the past couple of years, his relationship with the 49ers has soured, and the way he’s listed reflects the distance. The 49ers have him on the “reserve/left squad” section of its listed roster.

That’s where the reported money mechanics tighten the storyline. As Grant Gordon of NFL.com noted, the 49ers have voided all the money they owe Aiyuk in 2026.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network provided the clearest explanation for why this moment has lingered instead of ending cleanly. On the latest edition of Insiders earlier in June. Rapoport said. “First of all. here’s what the San Francisco 49ers would like: They have his rights. he’s not due any guaranteed money because he forfeited that by not showing up to his rehab.”.

Rapoport continued that San Francisco would prefer a trade, “probably to the Commanders, with his old friend Jayden Daniels and an organization that obviously knows him well, considering (Commanders general manager) Adam Peters was in San Francisco.”

What complicates it is the collision between two different wants. “What the Commanders would like to do is sign him without having to trade him,” Rapoport said. “… We’re in a situation where nobody wants to move at all. They’re all staring at each other. There’s really no deadline to make a move at all. So. until and unless everyone gets tired of Brandon Aiyuk sending Instagram messages. this is going to be a storyline that takes us through the summer.”.

The sequence matters: Aiyuk publicly positions himself toward Washington while the 49ers keep him in a reserve/left-squad status and, according to Rapoport’s account, removed the 2026 guaranteed money that would otherwise keep leverage balanced.

And then there’s the question that hangs over every new post: where he ends up in 2026. and whether he’s even on the field at all that year. Aiyuk’s latest video and his interaction with Daniels add another layer of doubt. At this juncture, it remains unclear where Aiyuk will play in 2026 if he plays at all.

  1. That “text me” thing is wild, like bro just say it in person. Also how can he be “gonna be a Commander soon” if he’s still under that contract? Sounds like he’s forcing the trade.

  2. The part where he said “you follow my rules” makes it sound like Jayden Daniels is doing something shady. But isn’t Daniels like an NFL QB not a coach? I’m confused. I also feel like 49ers are stalling just to lowball him.

  3. 49ers really out here paying 120 million and he’s still posting about the Commanders like it’s already done. Torn ACL and MCL tho so he’s not even playing… maybe he’s trying to get leverage by embarrassing them? I saw something on TikTok that said he was basically guaranteed to get traded, so idk why this is “doubt.”
