AirPods Max 2 Review: What’s Actually New?

Misryoum checks in one month after AirPods Max 2 launch: excellent sound and new H2 features, but the upgrade feels hard to justify.

AirPods Max 2 may be the best-sounding wireless headphones Apple has made, but they also make one thing painfully clear: this “new” version doesn’t do enough to earn an upgrade.

After a month with the premium pair. Misryoum found that the overall experience feels nearly indistinguishable from the original AirPods Max.. The look is the same. the controls follow the familiar design. and even the color lineup stays anchored to the same options.. That matters, because the price asks for a leap in confidence, not just a refresh.

The biggest shift comes from the H2 chip, which enables several software-driven capabilities.. Features like Adaptive EQ, Adaptive Audio, Personalized Volume, Live Translation, Conversational Awareness, and head-gesture controls are part of the package.. In daily use. Misryoum says these are genuinely useful. but they also come with an important catch: many similar functions already exist across other AirPods models. so the “only on Max 2” excitement is harder to feel.

In this context, the real question isn’t whether AirPods Max 2 sound great. It’s whether the improvements are new enough to justify paying for them again.

On the hardware side. Misryoum points to two notable details: a switch to USB-C charging and the return of Apple’s familiar metal construction and hefty feel.. Weight remains part of the tradeoff. and while the metal build reinforces that premium impression. the headband design remains a concern.. The mesh headband from the original has a reputation for stretching and sagging over time. and AirPods Max 2 do not meaningfully break that pattern.

Then there’s the issue that repeatedly undermines the “second generation” story: the Smart Case still isn’t there to truly protect the headphones in transit. and the design still restricts sleep behavior to the case.. Misryoum found that if you leave them out. they don’t slip into the deeper battery-preserving state. meaning you end up relying on the same workaround buyers already learned with the first model.

Even so, the audio quality remains the headline.. Misryoum describes AirPods Max 2 as delivering rich. warm sound with strong bass when music demands it. plus crisp clarity that makes long listening sessions feel effortless.. Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode also remain among the most capable in the category. with the H2 upgrade serving as reinforcement rather than a complete reinvention.

Misryoum’s bottom line after a month is simple: AirPods Max 2 are a high-quality product in isolation. but for existing owners. the upgrade case is thin.. The most compelling reason to buy is for newcomers who want the best-sounding experience now. not for anyone expecting a major fix to the original’s shortcomings.

The bigger takeaway for buyers is about opportunity cost: if you’re paying premium prices, you’re really buying resolution of past annoyances, not just incremental audio and feature polish.
