A.J. Ewing delivered key hits in his MLB debut as Freddy Peralta worked through early trouble in the Mets’ 10-2 win over the Tigers.
New York’s night needed a jolt, and A.J. Ewing answered it in his major league debut, helping power the Mets to a 10-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
The Mets built momentum early and added to it after Ewing’s first big-league contributions. with Freddy Peralta providing steady pitching that blunted Detroit’s sloppy play.. New York’s offense came in bursts. turning scoring opportunities into runs while the Tigers struggled to convert their own chances.
Francisco Alvarez made a noticeable impact when he doubled in the fourth and eventually scored on Carson Benge’s tiebreaking single.. Alvarez’s day ended shortly after, though, after he was removed in the sixth following a foul ball.. The team later announced that Alvarez has a right knee injury and will undergo imaging Wednesday.
New York’s roster picture is already complicated by injuries to regulars. with shortstop Francisco Lindor. first baseman Jorge Polanco. and center fielder Luis Robert Jr.. all missing time.. Robert’s absence played a role in Ewing’s path to the majors. creating an opening for the 21-year-old to be called up.
Ewing’s promotion came after limited time at the Triple-A level and relatively modest experience compared with most players who arrive in the majors.. He had spent only 12 games at Triple-A Syracuse and had 58 games of experience above High-A ball before being added to the Mets’ active roster on Tuesday.
On the field, the debut delivered the kind of variety teams hope for when they bring up a new bat. Ewing recorded his first career hit with an RBI triple in the seventh, drove in two runs, walked three times, scored twice, stole a base, and eventually flied out to the center-field warning track.
Peralta’s outing started with a jolt of his own when Dillon Dingler hit a leadoff homer in the second inning.. Detroit also tacked on offense later in the inning. including a sacrifice fly by Spencer Torkelson that helped push the Tigers to a 2-0 lead.. Even so, Peralta worked through those early setbacks and kept Detroit from building sustained pressure.
One of the more pivotal moments came defensively. Peralta ended the fifth after backing up a throw that got past third base and then cutting down Colt Keith at home plate, preventing Detroit from turning a developing play into more runs.
Despite allowing seven hits, Peralta settled into the rhythm of the game after the early damage. He struck out seven batters and walked one while recording a second straight start in which he came out on the winning side, following a stretch in which he went winless over his previous six.
For Detroit, Jack Flaherty was limited early, throwing 97 pitches over 3 2/3 innings.. The Tigers managed to score three runs total. giving way to six more as New York’s offense pulled away. and Detroit finished another rough night with the kind of inconsistency that has contributed to their difficult stretch.
Detroit remains a major-league-worst 7-17 on the road, and the loss marked their sixth defeat in seven games overall. They entered the night already struggling, and New York’s combination of timely hitting and defensive stops made it hard for Detroit to regain control.
Up next, the pitching and storyline shift quickly for both teams.. The Tigers are set to have Framber Valdez start Wednesday night. returning from a five-game suspension tied to intentionally hitting Trevor Story of the Boston Red Sox during a prior game that ended with a 10-2 loss.. In that earlier outing, Valdez allowed a career-high 10 runs.
Meanwhile, the Mets will turn to Christian Scott, who makes his 13th major league start on Wednesday. Scott is still searching for his first career win, entering the matchup with a 3.27 ERA.
