A GameCube can run Windows NT with tweaks

GameCube boots – A small team of developers ported a PowerPC version of Windows NT so Nintendo GameCube owners can boot it—an unusual mashup that also works on the Wii and the Wii U’s vWii mode.
There’s a certain kind of late-night tinkering that makes no sense on paper. A Nintendo GameCube wasn’t built to be a workstation. It’s known for playing the best version of Smash Bros., not for booting Microsoft’s mid-1990s operating systems.
And yet, with “a little work,” the diminutive purple console can be persuaded to run Windows NT.
The path there is not as simple as swapping a disc. The installer and setup rely on a PowerPC version of Windows NT that Microsoft once built. which is the foundation this effort leans on. The compatibility work for the GameCube was carried out by a group of contributors: Rairii, NTx86, and stonedDiscord. The resulting port has been made available on GitHub.
The GameCube is only part of the story. The port can also be booted on the Wii, and it can run within the Wii U through vWii mode.
Even getting it to boot isn’t the whole battle, though. If you try to follow along, input support is where the frustrations show up. Jiga Tech couldn’t get a specific keyboard controller working with the ported version of Windows NT. so keyboard hardware that looks “like” the example controller won’t automatically work—what matters is compatibility with the port.
There’s another practical snag hiding in plain sight: the GameCube never really came with a proper keyboard. If you want textual input. you’ll have to use a patchwork of controller-entry methods. or hunt down one of the rare GameCube controllers that actually has a full keyboard built into the middle—yes. they existed.
For anyone curious what the process looks like in real time, Jiga Tech has a video on YouTube that walks through the install process.
And if you’re still determined to keep going with this era of consoles, the same source humorously suggests ordering pizza from your Sega Dreamcast—because when your hobby has already crossed over into booting Windows NT on a GameCube, you might as well commit.
