‘A Disgrace’: Conservatives Fume As US Debt Officially Hits Over $40 Trillion, Doubling in a Decade

Prominent conservatives sounded the alarm this week as the U.S. national debt officially crossed the $40 trillion mark.
Republican senators and Fox News commentators were among those denouncing the policy failures and leadership of the last decade, which saw the debt balloon from just under $20 trillion at the end of President Barack Obama’s presidency to where we are now.
During President Donald Trump’s first term, he added some $7.8 trillion to the debt, increasing it overall by roughly 40 percent. Biden’s term in office added an additional $4.7 trillion to the debt, while Trump’s second term so far has added another $3.8 trillion, which, compounded by interest, has ballooned to the more than $40 trillion figure.
Fox News political analyst Guy Benson shared the Wall Street Journal’s report on the grim milestone and added, “A disgrace. Republicans are the fiscally irresponsible party, Democrats are the fiscally insane party. Voters claim they want this addressed, but don’t really act accordingly. Meaningful solutions are demagogued to the hilt — so further toward the fiscal abyss we climb.”
The Dispatch’s Jonah Goldberg noted, “On the last day of the Obama administration the national debt was $19.95 trillion. Now it’s $40 trillion. Trump and Biden and Congress under both parties doubled the national debt in the last decade. Once you get past the fun finger pointing, the fact remains this was a bipartisan failure.”
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) also fumed at the exploding debt, “In the mid-1990s the national debt was roughly $5 trillion and there was a push for a federal balanced budget amendment. In fact, the vote in the US Senate on the BBA fell just one vote shy of passage.”
“Imagine how different the fiscal trajectory of the country would have been had that requirement been adopted? Would anyone have predicted at that time that 30 years later the debt would reach $40 trillion?” he said.
