A cloud-based learning management platform Canvas that is used by schools and universities around the world, including in South Africa, is back online, after a cyber-attack took it down for hours starting 7 May.. Universities across the United States were also affected.. Students were unable to access their class materials after a security breach that was claimed by hacking group Shiny Hunters.. More than 8 000 institutions were affected by the incident after the hacking
group targeted Canvas’ parent company Instructure in a breach that compromised the personal data of millions of students and teachers.. Wits University was also among those institutions impacted along with Harvard, the University of Michigan and Pennsylvania State University among others.. Instructure says Canvas was fully back online and available for use adding that their external forensic partner had reviewed the known indicators and found no evidence that the threat actor currently had access to
the platform.. Reuters reports that ShinyHunters has a history of compromising global corporations.
