Cornyn Bill Would Rename U.S. 287 as Trump Interstate 47

Sen. John Cornyn introduced a bill to upgrade U.S. 287 to Interstate 47 and honor President Donald Trump, as Texas Senate runoff politics intensify.

A Texas senator is pushing legislation that would permanently tie a major highway route to President Donald Trump, even as he faces a tight runoff for the state’s U.S. Senate seat.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced a bill on Tuesday to rename and upgrade U.S. Highway 287—stretching about 1,791 miles from Choteau, Montana to Port Arthur, Texas—into an interstate designated as “Interstate 47.” The measure is co-sponsored by Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY).

Cornyn framed the proposal as both an infrastructure upgrade and a political nod to Trump’s legacy.. In a post on X, he said he was “proud to introduce legislation” to rename U.S.. 287 as Interstate 47 in honor of the president.. He also argued the interstate change would “upgrade” one of the nation’s longest highway corridors and could reduce travel costs. while claiming the route would be “forever” known by the designation.

Central to Cornyn’s case for the upgrade is a Texas Department of Transportation study from 2025 that assessed potential benefits if U.S.. 287 were converted to an interstate.. The analysis projected travel time savings of 7.37% by 2050 and estimated travel cost savings of $5.4 billion.. The proposal itself cites those types of savings as part of its justification for reclassifying the roadway.

The bill’s political timing is difficult to miss.. Cornyn is currently in a tense Republican primary runoff in Texas. where he is competing against Attorney General Ken Paxton for the state’s Senate seat.. The runoff followed an initial Republican primary held March 3 that also included Rep.. Wesley Hunt (R-TX), who was eliminated.. Cornyn and Paxton advanced only after neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote in that first round.

Trump has indicated he plans to make an endorsement decision between Cornyn and Paxton. but he has not done so publicly yet.. In recent comments to reporters, Trump declined to endorse either candidate.. He pointed to his view that both Paxton and Cornyn are strong figures. saying he has “a great Attorney General Ken Paxton” and “a great senator. John Cornyn.”

With that endorsement still pending. Cornyn’s decision to introduce a bill that explicitly elevates Trump’s name onto a Texas-to-Montana highway reflects an effort to align himself more directly with the president’s political brand—while also arguing the change could deliver tangible economic benefits for travelers along one of the country’s longest corridors.

Whether the legislation gains traction will hinge on the standard legislative and administrative process required to approve interstate designation changes. as well as on how quickly lawmakers move on the broader question of upgrading highway infrastructure.. For Cornyn. the potential payoff extends beyond policy: the proposal adds a high-profile Trump-linked contrast at a moment when he is trying to win over primary voters in a race where the president’s endorsement could matter.
