49ers’ Trent Williams hints last NFL deal ends

Trent Williams says the two-year, $50 million extension that keeps him with the San Francisco 49ers through 2027 will “probably” be his last NFL contract, with retirement decisions now shaped as much by family as football.

When Trent Williams talks about retirement, it isn’t abstract. It’s the kind of reality that creeps in when the calendar keeps turning and the work never stops.

The San Francisco 49ers left tackle, one of the league’s most reliable offensive minds and protectors, recently acknowledged that the two-year, $50 million extension keeping him under contract through 2027 will “probably” be his last NFL deal.

Williams is 37 years old, and the thought of walking away from an elite-level role is starting to feel personal. He described the moment as “scary. ” explaining he’s torn between playing until his body tells him to stop and choosing to step away while he can still perform at the level he’s long been known for.

More than wear and tear is driving the decision. Williams said family has become the central force behind how he thinks about retirement. His oldest daughter was born shortly before he entered the NFL. and as her approach to adulthood nears—with college on the horizon—Williams wants to be more present.

“I want to be there and be accessible,” Williams said, making it clear he wants to prioritize fatherhood after nearly two decades of NFL commitments.

Even with retirement plans becoming more concrete, Williams also insisted his focus hasn’t shifted away from the present. The upcoming season is still the mission. He continues protecting quarterback Brock Purdy while helping San Francisco chase another Lombardi Trophy as the franchise prepares for what it hopes will be a Super Bowl-contending 2026 campaign.

Williams’ long-standing standing in the league is part of why this conversation lands so hard. Drafted fourth overall in 2010. he established himself as a premier blindside protector and has earned a résumé that points toward first-ballot Hall of Fame recognition. Nicknamed “Silverback. ” he collected three straight First-Team All-Pro honors from 2021 to 2023. and he helped lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance.

The 49ers can’t ignore the timing of his words: an extension through 2027. the idea that he “probably” won’t sign another deal. and the admission that retirement is starting to look real. On the field. though. he’s still there—ready to do the job he’s done for years. even as the next chapter edges closer.

  1. I swear every player says “probably my last deal” and then signs some weird 1-year thing at the last second. Family or not, money talks.

  2. Wait so the extension is only $50 million for two years but keeps him through 2027? That doesn’t sound right, like they’re saying 2 years but it’s like 5 years. Maybe I read it wrong.

  3. “Scary” is right, I can’t imagine doing that job til your kids are grown. But also isn’t he like already injured all the time? feels like the 49ers are gonna be cooked if he goes, Purdy gonna get sacked into oblivion
