49ers could swoop for AJ Brown if Eagles market delays

49ers dark-horse – A.J. Brown’s growing dissatisfaction in Philadelphia has fueled talk that the Eagles could move him late. An NFL insider has pointed to the San Francisco 49ers as a possible “dark-horse” trade partner—if the market heats up after injuries and if San Francisco

For months, A.J. Brown has not looked like a player settling into Philadelphia’s plans. The tension has been building for the better part of a year, and even after the Eagles fired offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, Brown still wants out of the team.

Now, the question hanging over the Eagles’ offseason is whether this ends with a clean, expected destination—or something messier. Some have assumed Brown will be traded to the New England Patriots and reunited with former head coach Mike Vrabel. But NFL insider Jason La Canfora has floated a different possibility: a last-minute swerve by another contender.

La Canfora wrote that the Eagles are under no pressure to get Brown to another team early next month. Still. the ongoing tension between Brown and the organization is something that “would ideally get sorted out sooner rather than later.” In his view. there’s a specific reason the market could change before it finally solidifies: if a contending team loses a top receiver to injury within the next six weeks—spring practices underway—then urgency could spike and reshape who’s willing to pay.

That’s where the San Francisco 49ers enter the picture. La Canfora named them as a potential dark-horse suitor, pointing to two realities on the Bay Area side. The 49ers will part with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk at some point, La Canfora said. And while the team currently has a high payroll and cap space has been an issue. he argued there could still be a case for adding Brown—especially if recent injuries hit some of the 49ers’ top pass catchers.

The obstacle is Philadelphia’s price. The Eagles’ asking price is at least a first-round pick plus more. If San Francisco is going to trade for Brown, it would need to be confident he’s the missing piece in its “Super Bowl puzzle” to justify parting with its 2027 first-round pick.

The timing and the math collide with what the NFL believes is coming next on the calendar. Next year’s draft is being hailed as one of the most talent-rich in recent years. and many teams have been unwilling to surrender picks in that class because scouts have described it as especially deep. That kind of reluctance makes the Brown trade feel like a high-stakes gamble for whoever steps in.

Still, the attraction is clear. If the 49ers do move on from Aiyuk, adding a dynamic wide receiver like Brown could be enough to push their offense further—right when the league is already focused on who can survive the injury attrition that hits even the most prepared teams.
